We have several special events scheduled this week for our Grenadiers starting with a very busy Monday that includes PERT testing, our ESOL parent meeting on the freshman campus, and our "FAFSA Feast" (details on all just below).  Additionally our 55th Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive is getting underway spiced up with a fun competition between first period classes.

While Monday is not a school holiday, it is Veterans Day. If you know of a veteran or see one of our Colonial staff members who have served personally or one who has a family member that has worn the uniform, kindly take a moment to say thank you. It would mean a great deal to these people who have worked so hard and often at great personal risk to give us the many freedoms only the United States of America enjoys.  Thank you.

It's Great To Be a Grenadier!

Dr. Maestre
Principal

Colonial High School recognizes the value of our staff, students, and community members as an extra set of eyes and ears and asks for your help in identifying possible safety or security concerns. If you see something or hear of something suspicious, please say something. Be aware. Be responsible. Thank you!

This Week . . .

Monday, November 11 - Seniors will take the PERT if they still need Algebra 1 EOC passing score. Many of these same seniors need to use Khan Academy to practice and prepare for the SAT on Dec. 7 and the ACT on Dec. 14. These are two opportunities to earn the FSA ELA/Reading concordant score that is required for graduation. If a senior practices one hour each day for the next four weeks (28 hours), he/she is guaranteed to increase his/her score by 100 points!

Monday, November 11 - All parents of ESOL students are invited to attend the parent meeting from 5:00pm to 6:00 pm on the Freshman campus in the Media Center.  Graduation requirements, behavior expectations, resources and tutoring will be discussed.

Thanksgiving Donations: Our annual tradition of the Thanksgiving Assembly will take place the week before Thanksgiving. This is a great opportunity for each student to bring in nonperishable food items to be donated to the East Orange Community Center.  Last year, we fed over 200 families!  Of course, this 55th annual food drive will be a class competition - the first period with the most food collected and the best decorated food basket will be awarded and recognized at the Assembly.  If possible, bring in what you can, so we can feed even more families this year!

Friday, November 15: FFA will host their first Live Auction at 6:00pm.  For more information, contact Ms. Paoiff at [email protected]

Focus: Thank the veterans who are a part of our Colonial community...
For this edition, we would like to share a few words from our very own Colonel Frazier:

"On behalf of your Air Force JROTC cadets, I would like to notify all of our veterans who are continuing to secure our future, as you did during your time in military service to this great nation that you are not forgotten by this generation.

General Colin Powell, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State, said  'The most important thing I learned is that soldiers watch what their leaders do. You can give them classes and lecture them forever, but it is your personal example they will follow.'

This generation of Americans is watching what we do. They have questions and they are looking for answers, not in the books, but in our character that leads to success. You have shown them how to serve their nation as warriors, now you're showing them how to serve their future in preparing them to lead. They need to know who you are!"

Colonial High School is proud to celebrate the military veterans who work with our Grenadiers: Colonel Frazier, Mr. Burley, SMSgt Anderson, TSgt Davis, Mr. Izquierdo, Deputy Barrick, and Mr. Mezger, pictured below with Dr. Maestre and Ms. Lopez.  Colonial High School was thrilled to have Ms. Lopez, School Board Member of District 2, here to celebrate and honor our veterans!

Instructional Focus
Ms. Harper and Ms. Martinez utilize collaborative structures for learning in Spanish 1.

Students are reviewing vocabulary through the structure: Quiz-Quiz-Trade. In this review activity, students pair up with content questions on cards and quiz each other. Then they trade cards and pair up with another classmate, repeating the process multiple times. This gives students exposure to various bits of information, incorporates physical movement, and the opportunity to learn from a classmate!
