Happy Chanukah

Rabbi's Message

Jerry Cutler
Tevya is busy placing all of his family's possessions into a cart as he is forced to leave Anatevka, the only home his children have ever known. He painfully looks at the land, perhaps for the last time, and raises his eyes toward Heaven and says with a gesture of de ja vu resignation, "God, I know we are The Chosen People, but for once, could you choose some else?" Once again, the divisiveness of the 'good' versus the 'ugly.'

My dear CAT people, anti-Semitism is alive and well and flourishing faster than the proliferation of the number of establishments selling drugs.

I have been speaking about the necessity of our congregation getting together and discussing various ways to strengthen our ties to Jewish ideals and history in order to countermand antiquated concepts and hate-filled rhetoric coming from the radically uninformed and those who are simply stupid.

Call me, write to me. Tell me that you are willing to get together and discuss those issues facing us in our land and the various countries throughout the world. We must start somewhere. Let us do it here and now! On this season, dedicated to peace, mutual understanding and love, let us pray that the current wave of darkness and ill-will gives way to light and awareness so that all people will, at long last, stress and depress. "Stress Love and Depress Hate!" And, may it come to fruition - SOON!

A Happy and Healthy Chanukah and 2019 Everyone.
Rabbi Jerry, Jeff, Chelsea and Tess Cutler

Arne's Corner

Since last Spring, Hamas, which rules Gaza with an iron
grip, has orchestrated ongoing, unprovoked attempts to break through the  Israeli border. The goal is to hide terrorists in the crowd and sneak
them into Israel so they can kill and kidnap innocent Israelis. And as
if that were not enough, they've also floated "incendiary kites" over
the border, setting fires that have destroyed hundreds of acres of
Israeli farmland.

It shouldn't be difficult to identify and condemn the
guilty party. Right? But someone afflicted with IOI - "If only Israel" -
syndrome will blame the victim. That's what the UN General Assembly did  when it passed a resolution condemning not Hamas for it's aggression,  but rather Israel for defending itself.

The IOI syndrome is the belief that "If Only Israel"  would behave differently, every problem would somehow get resolved.  Nowhere is this syndrome on clearer display than at the many bodies of
the UN that spend much of their time stigmatizing Israel.

CONSIDER: The UN General Assembly has adopted more than  100 resolutions condemning Israel. That's more than five times the  number condemning - "all of the rest of the world's countries" - "combined."
CONSIDER: It's your tax dollars, I'm talking about.

Allow me to take a moment to wish each of you a  "Gezundtah" Thanksgiving and a Happy Chanukkah.

Review From the Pew
By Rabbi Jerry Ram Cutler

Quack

The fact that the very name of the show "Quack" can describe so many people I know, I attended its opening at the very beautiful Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City.

Written by Eliza Clark, the script is intelligent, funny and acted to perfection by a group of terrific actors whose timing and delivery of their lines borders on perfection.

Doctor Irving Baer (Dan Bucatinsky) is a celebrity physician who has no problem dispensing drugs or decisions regarding the health of women and children that have no validity. In fact, two children have died due to Irving's advice of not having children vaccinated. But, he certainly has no problem with notoriety and immense wealth.

His assistant Kelly (Jackie Chung), is always around to bolster his spirits and agree with his unsubstantiated conclusions.
Irving's wife, Meredith (Jassalyn Gilsig) a diet guru, brings the play to a hysterically funny level with a flurry of four-letter words describing the way she has been written about in the same article denouncing her husband's ill-fated decision. Meredith's objection to the slight mention of her unsavory practice and her possible downfall is pure hysteria. It envelops the entire stage making it difficult for "Quack" to reach that level of reaction again. Sadly, she is seen infrequently thereafter.

The brouhaha, started by a magazine article by River Thumbolt (Shoniqua Shandai), promises to have a devastating effect on the financial empire built by the Baer's. River's surprise appearance at Irving's office together with Kelly's attitude and facial reactions, is the turning point of the play.

In the middle of possible demise of the Baer's fame and fortune, Brock Silver (Nicholas D'Agosto), a misogynist blogger whose radio show is growing in popularity, shows up.

Ms. Clark is a highly talented playwright who has an awful lot to say and accomplish in 1 hour and 50 minutes without an intermission. Therein lies the problem. Too little time, too many spoken words to grasp the full effect and purpose of Ms. Clark's play.

That being said - for the most part you will enjoy the five actors and the witticism of Eliza Clark. And if you haven't been to the Kirk Douglass Theatre, it's about time you go. It is a truly remarkable and comfortable venue.
