Stations of the Cross
The Stations of the Cross is a 30 minute devotion that
offers witness to Jesus' passion and death.
At each station we use our senses and our imagination to reflect
prayerfully upon Jesus' suffering, death, and resurr ection, and to simply experience the visual images to reflect on Christ's love for us.

St John will pray the Stations
Wednesday, October 10 at 7pm in the church.

Safe Environment Training at St John

Thursday, October 11th from 6:30pm - 9:00 in Egan Hall
(Child Care available)

You need this training if you volunteer on campus or in the classroom, coach, chaperone or drive for field trips, volunteer at the shelter, participate in the ministries of the church such as ushers, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, sacristans, CLOW, etc.

The Archdiocese of Seattle requires all Church Personnel (defined as all clergy, all employees, and all volunteers who have ongoing, unsupervised contact with minors and vulnerable adults) to take part in our Safe Environment Program in three ways. They must:
  1. Successfully undergo a criminal background check every three years
  2. Complete the Protecting God's Children course within 90 days of beginning service
  3. Read and sign the Archdiocesan policies of conduct
You may complete these requirements by accessing the  Virtus database, our Catholic Risk Retention Group focused on the prevention of abuse.  New church personnel will need to create a  Virtus profile ( http://www.virtus.org/virtus/index.cfm) under the "Registration" tab.

If you have already taken the initial training, you will only need to update every three years.  Sign in at the volunteer computer in the school office to find out if you are up to date.

Garden Work Party
for Pat King, Saturday, October 27!
Many of you know Ms. Pat King, who, until her recent move to Mount St. Vincent in West Seattle was a wonderful parishioner and neighbor to
St. John Parish.  In addition to attending daily Mass regularly, she gave 24 years of service at the King County Jail in conjunction with the archdiocesan Criminal Detention Prison Ministry. In honor of her many years as a St. John Parishioner  and proud 1949 graduate of St. John School, and in coordination with her neighbors and the new owner of her house, we are going to transplant many of her beautiful flowers and bushes to our Parish grounds. The new house owner will be doing extensive remodeling, and the plants will likely be killed in the process if we don't save them. Everyone who knows Pat knows how much time and love she put into her gardens and her roses, so we hope to make her proud!

We really need your help during the transplanting process! It will be a lot of digging, shoveling, and hauling. Middle School and High School students needing service hours are welcome, too! Please come help this garden work party - stay for an hour or stay all day. Bring your gloves, trimmers, shovels! We'll be in front of the new Admin Building (old Rectory) from 9am to 2pm, Saturday, October 27.

CYO Basketball - Register Now!
Registration is open for CYO Basketball for coaches and players, until Oct. 29, 2018.
Don't wait!  If you do not register your child by this date, we cannot guarantee that they will be able to participate in CYO basketball this  year.

Review of skills for teams will take place beginning the week of October 30 (unless your child's team is in Soccer Playoffs that week).  Fourth and Fifth Grade teams will be separated by gender, and the teams will split up as evenly as possible.  For Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade there are Varsity and Junior Varsity teams for both boys and girls.  Independent reviewers will evaluate students to separate the teams fairly, according to CYO rules. Practices will start the week after teams are assigned.
Your child's specific practice and game schedule will be communicated by your child's coach following the assignment of teams.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Matt Deines via email at  [email protected] or by phone at 206-300-0741.

We are reading Revolutionary Saint: The Theological Legacy of Oscar Romero by Michael E. The book club will meet on November 4 at 6:45 PM at Nancy Busch Allen's home 6526 1st Ave  NW to watch Romero, the 1989 film with Raul Julia. Please join us.

Hi Bill,

I was blessed with a couple of prayers earlier this year, and I've been meaning to share with you.  They were printed in the worship aid at a reconciliation service at St. Benedict's this past lent, and they were very meaningful to me.

Here's one:

The house of my soul is too small for you to enter: make it more spacious by your coming. It lies in ruins: rebuild it. Some things are to be found there which will offend your gaze; I confess this to be so and know it well. But who will clean my house? To whom but yourself can I cry, "Cleanse me of my hidden sins, O Lord, and for those incurred through others, pardon your servant"? I believe, and so I will speak. You know everything, Lord. Have I not laid my own transgressions bare before you to my own condemnation, my God, and have not you forgiven the wickedness of my heart? I do not argue my case against you, for you are truth itself; nor do I wish to deceive myself, lest my iniquity be caught in its own lies. No, I do not argue the case with you, because if you, Lord, keep score of our iniquities, then who, Lord, can bear it:"   --St. Augustine, Confessions

And I edited it to so it comes more authentically from my own heart:

The house of my soul is too small for you to enter, Lord: make it more spacious by your coming. It lies in ruins: will you rebuild it? Some things are to be found there which will offend your gaze; I know it well. But who else will clean my house? To whom but yourself can I cry, "Cleanse me of my hidden sins, O Lord, and pardon your servant"? I do not argue my case before you, for you know me through and through; nor do I wish to deceive myself. If you, Lord, keep score of our iniquities, then who, my God, could bear it? You know everything, Father, and still you have forgiven the wickedness of my heart through your son. Thank you God. Praise you Jesus.

I'll share the other prayer another time.
Blessings, Kate Ahern

[Thanks, Kate.]

If you have prayer nuggets you'd like to share, email Bill Marty, [email protected].  Thanks!
