Submit a Comment on Virginia's Proposed
Medicaid Waiver by October 20th
As you know, VBCF was a strong advocate for Medicaid Expansion in Virginia. We celebrated its passage knowing that more Virginians would have access to health insurance, and therefore be able to afford breast cancer screenings and mammograms - the best tools we have in combating this disease.

But, now Virginia is getting ready to request a waiver from the federal government - a proposal called VA Compass ( Creating Opportunities for Medicaid Participants to Achieve Self-Sufficiency). If implemented, this waiver would impose work requirements, monthly premiums and other costly provisions. The result would be many fewer low-income families and individuals - up to 25,000 - gaining access to affordable health care.

ACTION ITEM:
Please review the information below from the Health Care for All Virginians Coalition (HAV) and submit a public comment on the VA Compass proposal by October 20th.  HAV has created an easy to use on-line tool  to help advocates make their comments quickly.  We encourage you to make a comment today and identify yourself as a breast cancer patient, advocate or loved one.

VBCF has already submitted a public comment.  Our main message:
We believe all women and men in VA should have access to affordable health insurance so they can access the cancer screenings they need. We strongly oppose the burdensome requirements of the COMPASS proposal

If you have questions or would like a copy of VBCF's full public comment, please email me:  [email protected]

THANK YOU!

Together, we won a major victory this year for Virginia families- expanding access to quality and affordable health coverage for nearly 400,000 Virginians.
Now, we need your help to protect these important strides we have taken together that advance health, economic, and racial  justice for communities across the state.

In addition to passing Medicaid expansion during the legislative session, the General Assembly also directed the state to propose what's called an 1115 Medicaid waiver request from the federal government, called   Virginia COMPASS.

If implemented,   Virginia COMPASS would impose work requirements, monthly premiums, and other costly provisions on to Medicaid enrollees.  The state public comment period on the proposal will end on Saturday, October 20.

After reviewing the public comments they receive, state officials will then submit this waiver request to federal health officials.

Bottomline: the Virginia COMPASS proposal will be burdensome for all involved-individuals and families as well as the state-and will lead to tens of thousands of Virginians losing health coverage through the Medicaid program.

We need you to join advocates from across the state to tell state and federal health officials NO to work requirements, NO to monthly premiums, and NO to other costly provisions of  Virginia COMPASS.

Key Concerns
  • The Virginia COMPASS proposal will lead to a loss of health coverage for Virginians
  • Work requirements are costly and don't make sense
  • The Virginia COMPASS proposal is overly complex and burdensome
