Dear St. George Families,

Bishop Soto of the Diocese of Sacramento gave a keynote address to religion teachers within his diocese in which he outlined what we all must do if we are to grow in the customs, wisdom and ways of Jesus. If we wish to become Christ-like, Christ must become part of us; this means putting faith into practice. His speech was addressed to teachers of religion but they are applicable to every parent raising children; parents who want their children to grow in spirituality. What are those habits we should teach?

*The habit of prayer: Children should know the prayers of the faith; prayer should be part of every family meal. Prayer is particularly good at bedtime including an examination of conscience asking for forgiveness for any wrongs of the day. It's a great bonding time for parents and children.

*The habit of the Commandments: Along with knowing the Commandments, children should know the positive reasons for the Commandments and avoid sinning against them.

*The practice of charity: Use any opportunity to encourage works of charity and justice with your children; with young children, just the importance of sharing.

*The habit of sacrifice: It's good to focus on needs, not only wants. It's important to teach children the difference.

*The common meal: A minimum of three family meals together a week has a huge impact on children. Ordinary moments of family life can be the saving grace of the family. Don't overlook them.

*Keeping the Lord's Day holy, especially by attending Church Services: Every family's top priority on Sunday should be to attend Church, and then to keep the rest of the day holy as well. Sunday used to be family day. Families would gather for dinner and to spend time together.

*The practice of meditation, especially through the recitation of the rosary. Be sure to set aside some time each day for your own prayer time. Offering a prayer on the way to work or in the evening at bedtime is an excellent way to ask God's blessing on your family. Meditation is also an excellent way to let God speak to us; take some quiet time and listen! God is speaking to you.

*The rituals of reverence: Children and young people need to be taught the rituals of reverence in a Church or any other sacred space: kneeling, genuflecting, the reverent bow, and maintaining a reverential silence during Church services are all important rituals to teach children - and need to be modeled and taught by parents.

You are your child's first and primary teacher - especially in matters relating to faith and spirituality. Spirituality begins in the home; it is supported here at school. God bless you in your most important job - that of being a Christian/Catholic parent. We can't just talk about it; we must do it. It must be part of our life! My father didn't tell me how to live. He lived, and let me watch him do it.

NUT ALLERGY STATEMENT

REGARDING SNACKS BROUGHT TO SCHOOL

VERY IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ!

All food items brought to school for birthdays (PreK and K only), gold slip parties, holiday parties, retreats, etc. must be store bought and must contain a label. The items must be nut free, including but not limited to peanuts and tree nuts (almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, chestnuts, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pistachios, pinenuts and walnuts).

If a product label says the food item contains, may contain, is produced in a facility that contains or is manufactured on equipment that processes peanuts and or tree nuts, this item is unacceptable.

Home prepared food items are not allowed.

Please read labels and plan accordingly when choosing snacks to bring to school.

PARENT CONFERENCE SIGN-UP

Parent Conferences for PreK - 5th grade students will be held on Friday, October 19th. PreK - 5th graders will not attend school this day.
Parent Conferences for 6th - 8th grade students will be held on Monday, October 22nd.
Sixth - eighth grade students will not attend school this day.

Cash and Check payments are accepted at school.

Online credit card and bank draft payments are available at www.myschoolbucks.com.

All families are encouraged to set up alerts and monitor your students' cafeteria purchases at www.myschoolbucks.com. It is not necessary to make payments in order to set up an account.

Adult meal price - $5.50 - exact amount or check only.

Grandparent's Day

Friday, November 9th

* St. George will host Grandparent's Day on November 9th for Kindergarten - 8th grade.
* Pre-K will host their own Grandparent's Day and will not participate on November 9th.

Invites are forthcoming and each family will receive 3 invites
Volunteers are needed for Grandparent's Day
Golf carts and golf cart drivers are need for Grandparent's Day
Many volunteer opportunities are available

Morning Receptionist Needed - St. George Church Office

St. George Church has an immediate opening for an experienced receptionist. This is a

23 hour/week position, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The receptionist serves as the church's first point of contact with church members and the general public. The successful candidate will be a motivated self-starter with a kind and professional demeanor, and will possess a positive attitude and excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. He or she must be able to remain productive with minimal supervision, and able to work as part of the church ministerial team. He or she must have strong computer skills, familiar with the Windows operating system and be proficient with Microsoft Office. ST. GEORGE BOY SCOUT TROOP

BSA Scout Troop 136 at St. George is open to youth ages 11-18, no prior scouting experience is required. Join a large, active troop with over 30 Scouts and go on monthly outings. Meetings are held every Wednesday at 7:00 pm at St. George. Troop 136 would also like to begin training adults interested in leading the girl's troop which will be formed in February. Leaders must be an individual of good character.
