CONGRATULATIONS TO HON. TAM NOMOTO SCHUMANN

Judge  Tam  Nomoto  Schumann  was elected  88th  President  of  the  California  Judges Association (CJA) and started a one-year term on October 13, 2019. Judge Schumann has been recognized as a pioneer in judicial education and has been a strong proponent of, and leader in, diversity on the bench and bar. Although retired, she still teaches at UCI Law School and sits on assignment in various courts around the State. She is the first retired judge and first Asian American woman to hold the position of CJA President. One of her main themes for the upcoming year is diversity.
China, Economic Espionage & National Security PROGRAM 

OCAABA and UCI Law would like to thank Nick Hanna, the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California; Brian Sun, partner-in-charge of the Los Angeles office of Jones Day; and John Littrell, partner at Bienert | Katzman PC (San Clemente and Los Angeles offices) for speaking at this program on November 19 about the DOJ's China Initiative, which is designed to combat economic espionage and trade secret theft.  
Tony Wang, partner in the Newport Beach office of O'Melveny & Myers LLP, moderated the program.

The Public Law Center's South East Asian Legal Outreach Program (SEALOP) provides free civil legal assistance at the BPSOS Center for Community Advancement, Inc., 13950 Milton Ave. Suite 301, Westminster, CA 92683.    
Clinics take place on the second Saturday of every month from 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m.

The International Law Section of the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA)invites you to a CLE presentation on December 2nd:  "Cuba 2020, Open or Closed."  Whether you are planning on going to Cuba or not, this topic is very timely and informative.  The presentation will include a review of the current U.S. administration laws and regulations governing U.S.-Cuba relations, provide a comprehensive legal overview of the U.S. embargo of Cuban trade, travel and remittances, and include a study of the evolving regulatory landscape over U.S.-Cuba relations. 1.0 General MCLE credit

Office of the City Attorney, City of Oakland Seeks Summer Law Clerks 
The Oakland City Attorney's Office will be accepting applications beginning December 1, 2019 from law students for full-time and part-time summer Law Clerk positions.  Applications for clinical semesters and volunteer fall and spring Law Clerks will also be accepted. The summer Law Clerk positions are full-time (37.5 hours per week). However, a part-time schedule may be approved. Due to budget constraints, these positions are available only on a work-study, volunteer or academic credit basis. Fall and spring Law Clerk positions are part-time and may be staffed on a volunteer or academic credit basis. There is not a minimum time commitment for Law Clerks, but reasonable notice of departure is requested.

The PLC staff can answer any questions you may have related to your case to support you in your pro bono representation; locate a mentor to help you; supply you with samples and manuals (some case types excluded); provide translation support in Spanish and Vietnamese; and arrange for office space for you to meet with your client at PLC.
