In anticipation of the October 17 cannabis legalization date, the Government of Alberta has prepared a public awareness communications package municipalities can use to advise their citizens of the local rules and regulations for buying and consuming cannabis.
AUMA extends its sincere sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Lloyd Bertschi, who passed away on October 5, 2018. Lloyd served the community of Morinville for 6 years as councillor and as Mayor for 11 years before resigning in November 2012. Lloyd also served as AUMA President in 2009-2010.
AUMA and the Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) are pleased to launch a new initiative that will help inform municipal governments of the history and culture of Indigenous peoples as a foundation for building understanding and relationships through an experiential learning session known as a Blanket Exercise.

Employee policies can significantly impact how a termination of an employee can be effected. Consider Stewart v Elk Valley Coal Corp., a decision of the Supreme Court of Canada. In this case, an employee, Stewart, worked in a mine driving a loader where workplace safety was a high priority. As a result, the employer had implemented a policy that required employees to disclose any dependence on drugs before a drug-related incident occurred.
