Donor Spotlight
For this month's Donor Spotlight, we had the pleasure of speaking with Candace Reagan of the  Celanese Foundation.  Supporters of First3Years, the Foundation focuses on initiatives to improve the fundamental living conditions of people, with a special focus on families and children.  We are so grateful for the support of the Celanese Foundation and loved hearing what they had to say about their partnership with  First3Years. Keep reading to learn more!

What attracted you to the organization/Why did you get involved?
I got involved because I have a heart for children in need of love, acceptance and compassion. As a mother of five, I realize how fortunate I am, and I want to give back and help those who could benefit from my experience.

In your opinion, what is the most important work that this organization does?
I believe the Safe Babies program is the most important work of First3Years. Lessening the long-term impact of neglect and reuniting families when possible gives infants and toddlers a better chance of having healthy and happy lives in functioning families.

How does First3Years uniquely contribute to the community?
First3Years reaches a segment of the population that is often forgotten because they cannot speak for themselves. As 39% of child abuse and neglect cases are infants and toddlers, this is a vital service to our community. I love that they include foster parents in CPS visits now, because it makes the visits less traumatic for the babies.

What do you hope the organization will achieve in the near future?
I am looking forward to seeing the redecorated rooms at CPS completed. A group from Celanese went out and painted the visitation rooms, and so I am excited to see all the new furniture, toys, pictures, books, etc. that will make children more comfortable at visitation times.

Does anyone in your life play a role in supporting your involvement? In providing inspiration?
Celanese is incredibly supportive of employee volunteerism. In fact, employees are encouraged to volunteer 16 paid hours per year. We also have a foundation that offers grants and project funding to organizations that serve primary education, thriving families and safe places. We are fortunate to have a company that values giving back to the community.

Congratulations to Judge Bonnie Hellums, the 2018 T. Berry Brazelton, MD, Infant Mental Health Advocacy Award recipient!

Judge Bonnie Hellums, career has been based on helping people better their lives from the beginning. She became a certified alcohol and drug counselor and worked in prevention by helping children who were exposed to drugs and alcohol in utero. After 18 years in the university setting, she earned a law degree and practiced family law for 10 years. She ran for family court judge and served for 20 years (1994 - 2014) in the 247th District Family Court before retiring.

As the Family Court judge she was able to assist parents in understanding how their actions impact their young children. Judge Hellums started the first (and only) Family Drug Court in Harris County and incorporated the Infants and Toddlers Court as well. This was established because Judge Hellums realized the damage being done to families and children because of substance use/abuse. The Family Drug Court works to keep families together while parents seek treatment for substance abuse in an effort to minimize the impact on young children in the family.

Judge Hellums has been an advocate for infants and toddlers for more than 25 years and continues to do so in her retirement. She is most proud of the work she has done in coordination with the child welfare system and the Infants and Toddlers Court to help young children have a safe environment while experiencing family transitions. She served on the Supreme Court's Permanent Judicial Commission on  Children Youth and Families for 8 years. She is trained in Trauma Informed Care and is designated as one of nine to serve on the Texas Department of Family Protective Services Advisory Board.  Beginning in September she will serve as a visiting judge for the Child Protective Court in Harris County until December.
