Wow! It's already October.
It’s hard to believe that my year as your chair is coming to a close soon. The board has been in overdrive this entire year to bring new events and opportunities for everyone. This month is certainly no different.
This weekend brings the return of one of my favorite Create Little Rock events, PopUp in the Rock. This program works to highlight a selected area of our city each year. This year's PopUp demonstration will be in Southwest Little Rock.
We've got an event next week hosted by Ballet Arkansas as part of our new "Get Cultured" programming series. This month's Happy Hour takes us to west Little Rock to a relatively new restaurant. (Don't let the rush hour traffic scare you away from this one - the Rodney Parham area doesn't get as congested as Chenal or Cantrell and is usually clear by 6pm.) Finally, our Unplugged Speaker Series is better than ever. Following an amazing lunch engagement last month with Warren Stephens, this month's Unplugged will be with Little Rock's new mayor, Frank Scott, Jr.

PopUp in the Rock

This year,
PopUp in the Rock
project will highlight the many opportunities to live, work, and play in Southwest Little Rock. Southwest Little Rock is one of the most diverse areas of central Arkansas, with a wide variety of restaurants, businesses, and outdoor recreational activities. On October 5, at the intersection of Forbing Road and Geyer Springs, PopUp will demonstrate the opportunities available in this area by hosting popup shops, a food truck pavilion, and Rebel Kettle Beer Garden, while encouraging neighborhood walkability with safer pedestrian crossings. Home to Fourche Creek and the proposed Southwest Trail, this year’s event will also include guided canoe and kayak trips on the Fourche and bike rides in the area. In addition, this year PopUp will feature a “Food Passport” that highlights the diversity and deliciousness of surrounding restaurants. All events are free, open to the public, and kid friendly!

About PopUp in the Rock:
PopUp in the Rock is an annual joint project between Create Little Rock and
studioMAIN
, a nonprofit design collective. It is part of a national movement known as the
Better Block Project
. It isn’t a street fair or a block party; rather, it’s a temporary urban demonstration – a live rendering – of what is possible. It exhibits important elements of the city, such as multiple transportation options and an active street edge, and provides activities that create community. This group of young professionals engages with community members to determine specific needs and institute changes such as bike lanes, pop-up shops, dining pop-ups, and entertainment. By transforming just a few blocks into a thriving, complete locale, PopUp in the Rock exemplifies the idea that developing potential, even block-by-block, can make our city better

Based on the popularity of last year's happy hour at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre where we toured the facility and heard a preview of the upcoming season, we're launching a new CLR event series called "Get Cultured." The next installment will be a similar experience at Ballet Arkansas in their Main Street rehearsal space. We'll learn about the mission of Ballet Arkansas and hear about their upcoming performances, including a live in-costume preview of their special weekend-only performance of Sleepy Hollow.

Plus, Create Little Rock members can get 20% off tickets to the performance of Sleepy Hollow on Saturday, October 19th, at 7:30pm. The performance will be on the North Little Rock campus of UA-Pulaski Tech in their
CHARTS Theater
and will be a multimedia experience featuring 360 degree sound and eerily captivating video and photo projections. See below for details.

Petit & Keet
in Little Rock's West Village neighborhood. Petit & Keet burst onto the scene just over 2 years ago and quickly became a destination and mainstay for great food, craft cocktails, and a fun atmosphere.
They've got a large bar area and even larger enclosed patio, plus they're giving us our own private room just off the bar with some free appetizers.

Create Little Rock is excited to welcome Mayor Frank Scott, Jr., as this month's Unplugged speaker! Little Rock voters made history on Dec. 4, 2018, when they selected Frank Scott. Jr.. as the City's 73rd mayor and first elected black chief executive. Come hear about his journey along the way and his vision for a united Little Rock.
Our Unplugged Speaker Series offers the chance to dialogue with local business and civic leaders in a laid-back environment with complimentary beer and wine.
We'll be hosted by UA Little Rock in their beautiful new downtown campus.

About Frank Scott, Jr.:
Frank Scott began his public-service career in the office of Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe where he served for five years, first as deputy policy director and later as director of intergovernmental affairs. While on Beebe's staff, Scott continued his education, earning a Master's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. That degree, with a concentration in finance, complimented Scott's undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the Fogelman College of Business at the University of Memphis.
Determined to put his finance training to work, Scott accepted a position as a community banker with First Security Bank, giving him insight into the issues facing small businesses across the City. At the same time, he continued to devote a significant amount of time to serving both his City and State as a member of the Port of Little Rock Board of Directors and as a member of the Arkansas Highway Commission - experiences which gave Scott an understanding of the critical infrastructure that forms the backbone of any city.
As an associate pastor, youth mentor, and professional, Frank lives out the values he learned growing up in Southwest Little Rock, the same area where he lives, today. He gives back to the City that invested in him and reminds young people regularly that values are the foundation of a purpose-filled life.
A firm believer in education and the opportunity that it can provide, Frank is a former member of the Pulaski Technical College Board of Trustees (now UA-PTC) and currently serves on the UA-Little Rock Board of Visitors.

Volunteers are needed to assist with Arkansas's largest Halloween festival - Boo at the Zoo! Boo kicks-off Oct. 18 with their Adult Night (must be at least 21 years old to volunteer for this night) and picks up Oct. 20 for a special night for McLarty Auto Group and then continues with our VIP/Members Night on Oct. 24 and the general event Oct. 25 - Nov. 1. The event is 6 - 9 p.m. and there are a variety of volunteer opportunities available.

was conceived by the Economic Development Committee of Create Little Rock's
Think Big Little Rock
initiative. It's designed to be a 1-stop shop for things to do in the Little Rock Region. It's in its beta phase while we build up a committee of volunteers to regularly contribute upcoming events and activities to the site. The Be501 committee is chaired by

Talent Development Committee:
Responsible for selecting speakers for our Unplugged Speaker Series, organizing the Get on Board program, and facilitating Serve the Rock and Crew at the Zoo.
Land in the Rock Committee:
Organizes and implements our annual Land in the Rock summer program designed to entertain interns, law clerks, and medical residents who are here for the summer and demonstrate to them what Little Rock has to offer.
