We are making health kits for an organization that serves children in Uganda who have foot parasites called "jiggers." Sole Hope sets up clinics that remove the jiggers, bandage the wounds and provide shoes for the children so they won't become re-infected.
Each kit we send will contain cotton balls, a 2 inch sized safety pin, band aids, antibiotic cream, alcohol wipes, and sheets of stickers all packaged in snack sized and quart sized zip-lock bags.
We also need cash contributions for shipping these foot care kits.
You can help by donating these items at the table in the hallway or by making a cash contribution (memo line on envelope or check
Sole Hope
.) Then come to our foot care kit assembly party on Sunday, April 22. We will write notes to the children and package up the kits. If you want to know more about Sole Hope and what it does, go to www.solehope.org.

Dear Friends,
Every Sunday we come to church bringing our world of joys, sorrows, and continuing anxieties, and our unanswered questions. Every Sunday we walk into the sanctuary with a hope of making some kind of meaning of the craziness of our lives. Every Sunday God brings us into his house and speaks to us and feeds us with his peace, and then he sends us out to be what God has made us: the body of Christ.
But on ordinary Sundays, we sometimes forget that God is at work trying to rid us of our old selves and raise us up to a new life in the risen savior, Christ Jesus. We forget that God's action in the death and resurrection of Jesus gives us something to change us, to make us renewed in the spirit of God's goodness. Instead, we are distracted by too little sleep, or an energetic toddler, or a recent success, or a medical diagnosis, or something in our community that frightens us. Our thoughts are scattered everywhere, and we grow to be uncertain about who we are and whose we are.
In the face of the distractions and the disruptions, we have the days of Holy Week: Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter. Each one is a gift from God to help us remember and refocus and return our lives to ones of hope and peace. God gives us the opportunity, as a church and as individuals, to reset our visions toward the understanding of forgiveness in the cross and salvation in the empty tomb.
Following the events of the crucifixion and the resurrection, the disciples, still grieving over the death of Jesus, were wondering "Now what?" And from reading the scriptures, we know what happens. They discovered a new meaning for their lives - Christ is alive and with them.
And they found a new direction. Even with the doubts and the anxieties of life, God calls us to follow-to be life changers for others and to give hope to a troubled world. Jesus has prepared the way of peace and we, like the disciples, are to tell his story to people everywhere.
Christ is with us, walking the same path we are sent on, looking out for us and blessing us with his hope. His promise is our message, his people are our focus, and his way is our way.

|
Highlights from our Church Council meeting of March 11, 2018
Evangelism & Missions: Carla Hazen, Amanda Garner
The team began planning the Family Fall Festival for Oct. 6 - possible ideas: hayrack rides, balloon artist, pumpkin patch, obstacle course, funnel cakes.
Movies on the Lawn to be held in June and soon after VBS in July - desire to show more current movies and some movies for grownups.
Barbecues at Sheltered Living, maybe also Loving Hearts, Breakthrough House
The team has a goal date of June 10th for a Lowman blood drive to be held in Julie Schalansky's honor.
Provide evening meal for Campus Ministry at Washburn on Thursday April 26th
The team wants to move the all-church picnic back to late summer - too much already going on at this time.
Would like to set up a carpool pickup team
Is putting together a corporate prayer to be produced on laminated cards so that the entire congregation can be praying for the same things for Lowman.
Clipboards have been passed around, asking people to sign up to be greeters and/or on a prayer chain.
Technology & Communication: Adam Schafer
Lights have been ordered for the sanctuary to better illuminate the area in front of the steps where the bell choir sets up to play. These will be paid for by Memorials.
We could use the electronic sign for more and different messages. Anyone wishing to post on the sign only needs to give the information to Debbie to forward to Adam. ([email protected])
Chimes - some complaints have been made by a neighbor - suggestions that we limit the number of times they ring daily to four (9:00, noon, 3:00 & 6:00) and also that we turn down the volume.
Fellowship Committee: Liz Gragg
The Craft Fair will be held on the first weekend of November - Friday and Saturday, but not on Sunday.
Pastor's Report: Tony Hazen
Larry Sims was appointed to be an assistant treasurer.
Security - Randy Gragg accompanied a Topeka police officer on a security evaluation walkthrough of Lowman - the evaluation pointed out many ways Lowman has done security well but also a number of items that need to be addressed. Randy and Dale Schafer attended training through the Topeka Police Dept. that addressed many different security issues, including active shooter situations. Pastor Tony, Randy and Dale will be working on a security proposal to present to the council.
Pastor Tony urged everyone to make use of the website (www.lowmanumc.org) and newsletter. Communication is KEY in keeping the congregation apprised of all that is happening here.
New Business
Spring Tea will be held on April 21st at 1 pm - chalk art, presentation by Skinner's Nursery regarding upcoming planting season, photo booth, storytelling- $15 adults, $5 for children, tickets to be presold.
Pastor Tony reminded everyone of our plan to take 10% of the monies from every fundraiser and apply them to Mission Shares.

Lowman served lunch at Let's Help on January 29 to 324 adults and seven children. Twelve volunteers prepared and served Italian Delight to our guests.
We originally only had nine people signed up to volunteer that day; however, God was in the center of our shortage, and several people appeared unexpectedly! Praise God! We can count on Him every time/all the time!!
Thanks to all who participated. God bless you for your faithfulness in this important ministry. Our next serving date is Monday, April 30. Please let me know if you can help.

A note from Debra Stufflebean, Director of the Shepherd's Center of Topeka:
As a sponsoring congregation of Shepherd's Center, your church places value on active aging, recognizing that seniors who are continually learning, physically fit, and growing spiritually remain happy and stay healthier longer than those who become inactive and isolated. We thank your congregation for supporting us financially and/or providing free space for our group activities. If you are over age 55, we invite you to explore what SCT has to offer.
Spring Adventures in Learning session at the Shepherd's Center of Topeka begins April 6 and runs for four consecutive Fridays, 9-11:30, here at Lowman. Each Friday enjoy two classes from the eight offered and refreshments. For more information: 785-249-3258 or www.shepherdscentertopeka.org. Come see what others are talking about!

Help Ugandan Children
|
Lowman is making and sending foot care kits to remove jiggers and protect the feet of children in Uganda. Sole Care also provides children with shoes to prevent further infestations.
Jiggers come from the tiniest flea. When it's time to reproduce, the female flea will attach to the nearest warm blooded mammal she can find. She just needs an available soft place to bite, and then she burrows herself in, head first, looking for blood. The initial bite and burrowing is actually not painful, just a bit irritating.
During the next couple of weeks as the parasitic flea feeds off blood, the host grows a blister around her that usually causes much pain. The jigger's egg sack continues to grow, severely damaging feet and stealing the child's ability to lead a normal life. One female flea can produce literally hundreds of eggs that fall to the ground to hatch. Then, the tiny fleas look for the nearest warm blooded mammal to bite and usually find the same host as their mother. With many jiggers attached, the child begins to have trouble walking because of the intense pain. Soon, walking becomes impossible.
Please donate supplies or money for Lowman to make foot care kits for these children. Also, come help us assemble the kits after worship on Sunday, April 22.

A big thank you from Doorstep to the people who donated items for Soup Line which was held Feb. 28. Theme baskets--Marvin Pohl and Lowman Crafters Nancy Shermoen, Dianna Massie, Connie Lummis & Rosie Cooper; desserts--Carla Hazen, Barbara McLain, and Dianna Massie. THANKS!
Susan Venis, Doorstep Coordinator
We had a successful Operation Soup Line! Thank you to everyone who helped out selling tickets, making desserts, donating baskets, volunteering, and attending the event. A great big thank you to Cathy Butler who made all of the soup and chili. We almost met our highest number of delivery orders again this year with 421, just two shy. In total, we served 1,015 for lunch through delivery orders, carry out, and at the event. We had 46 theme baskets making over $3,100. In total, we made approximately $18,300 for our 15th Annual Soup Line.
Thank you to all who worked so hard to spruce up our building and grounds this spring. You did a great job and we really appreciate your efforts!
