VOLUNTEER CORNER

On Thursday, Jan 25th, Sierra Roots participated in the Nevada County Point in Time count of homeless.  We provided soup and rolls from 10 - 2pm for over 200 guests and staff.  It was a very busy operation with about 8 crock pots of soups and chili heated and ready.

The following people were instrumental in making it a huge success, ensuring we had soup available for through the entire day. Diane Weichel, Suzan Lang, Linda and Gary Grube, Jackie Wilson, Dee Dinelli, Paul Boisvert and Rick Marshall, Kathy Mann, Heather Furby, Mary O'Brien, Joe Hasenstab.  Also special Thanks to two NUHS seniors who stepped in to help serve all day - Taylor Selm and Jahllah Koch.

Community partners who stepped up in a big way to provide breads, rolls and soups were Safeway, Raleys, Briar Patch Co-op, SaveMart, Flour Garden, and Diego's and Summer Thyme restaurants, and Community Meal members from St. Patrick Church.  Their contribution was much appreciated.

Grant Team Update

The Sierra Roots grant team met and discussed the need to use a professional consulting firm to assist in finding and writing grants for the 2+ million dollar project of the "Small Home Supportive Community." In moving forward they will be pursuing large grant possibilities of 1 million dollars or more.

Welcome Craig Silberman

Craig Silberman joins the Board of Directors at Sierra Roots as our new treasurer. Craig moved to Grass Valley in 2016, to be closer to his parents, who live in the bay area, and to enjoy a milder climate after living in Chicago, Minneapolis, and the mountains of Colorado. He is a volunteer for half a dozen of the area's non-profits, and learned about Sierra Roots when he read about the need for help with the temporary warming shelter.  It was during an overnight shift at the shelter that he was told of Sierra Roots' need for an accounting and finance professional, and offered his services there, having spent the majority of his career in that field.

Though having no personal connection to homelessness, Craig feels his life has benefited from good luck, and wants to help those who haven't been as fortunate.

Ben and Dale go for a Hike

Ben and Dale are on a big mission: to raise money for Sierra Roots by walking the Pacific Coast Trail this April. They plan to walk at least 100 miles, and hope to find sponsors to donate a dollar a mile. Previously Ben has hiked the Appalachian Trail.

Ben says: "Next week, as soon as we get a bear box, we'll do a practice run around Lake Tahoe, to get used to the elevation."

If you would like to support Ben and Dale in this brave endeavor, please contact Sierra Roots via email or phone (530 751-3263), or you can contact Ben directly:

VOLUNTEER MEETINGS

Next Monthly Volunteer Meeting:
March 8, Thursday, at 1 PM
First Methodist Church ~ 433 Broad Street, Nevada City
 info@sierraroots.org *  530 751-3263

Our monthly meetings are intended for those who are just becoming acquainted with
Sierra Roots and want to learn more about the various volunteer opportunities,
as well as for those already involved so everyone is up to date, informed and involved in discussion and planning.

Not everyone is aware of the many ways Sierra Roots engages and builds community with our homeless friends while we continue to look for land for our Village.  For example, Sierra Roots operates an emergency weather shelter, serves meals twice weekly, and provides advocacy services, to homeless individuals. You can learn about these and other volunteer opportunities at our monthly meetings.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE HAVE A NEW PHONE NUMBER WITH
