Our Nursery is available for all children during
before-service programming (starting at 9:30 AM)
and children younger than our preschool* class
during the Worship Service.
Our Worship for All Ages services are intentionally multi-generational
so that young people preschool-aged* and older may happily participate
in the entire Worship Service.
For our other Worship Services, all young people preschool-aged*
and older will begin in the service and exit for their
religious education classes after the Time for All Ages.
Please pick up children at 12:15 PM.
*Preschool students are 3 years old
by September of the current school year.

My Dear Ones,
Wow, I hope you all read the September Forum-it was our biggest in recent memory, with 25 articles highlighting the kick-off of our program year. Although this month's Forum is a tad smaller, it still is packed with information on all the exciting things going on at MVUUF, both new ventures and old favorites.
In case you didn't have time to cozy up with last month's Forum, I want to share my highlights from last month. First of all, we celebrated the new partnership between our Children and Youth Religious Education (CYRE) program and our RE Director's organization, the 21st Century Peace Literacy Foundation, at the reception for our exhibit at the main branch of the Dayton Metro Library. If you would like to learn more about the exhibit, you can find information in the YRE Hallway (look for the big U, hehe).
In celebration of the International Day of Peace (September 21st), I was privileged and humbled to welcome 5 Rivers Chautauqua to MVUUF for their 5th annual Peace Tree Planting. 5 Rivers Chautauqua is an organization that promotes peace throughout the Miami Valley area. Their two founders, Guy Jones (Miami Valley Council for Native Americans) and Tom Bensman performed the ceremony using a white pine tree in honor of the Iroquois Great Law of Peace. As in the Iroquois ceremonies, we made a commitment to bury our weapons with the tree (hurtful words written on pieces of paper) and live harmoniously with one another. You may see our young peace tree in MVUUF's front yard, near the Labyrinth. May it remind us of our commitment for many years to come.
September was also a busy month for us in public social action, with 3 protest rally requests: Unitarian Universalist Justice Ohio (UUJO) End Gun Violence in Columbus, Dayton Climate Strike, and UUJO Educate a Legislator Day in Columbus. I was thrilled to see MVUUF members and friends join me at all 3 events. While rallies and protests aren't enough on their own, they have proven to be an effective way to show lawmakers we are serious about specific issues. I was honored to speak at the final event and to hand-deliver our letter and petition to the Governor's staff. We are so much stronger together.
Last but certainly not least, our Board and Program Council hosted a fabulous Fall Fellowship Fair with over 20 MVUUF committees and groups participating. We included the fair in our Sunday service so that people had time to learn more about all the activities, committees, and groups MVUUF offers. One of the most important things I learned in seminary was the following: people visit a church because of the minister and stay because of the congregation. It is the connections that you all make with each other that make people feel like they have found their people-like they truly Belong.
And not to be too obvious (again, ha), guess what this month's Soul Matters theme is. Yup, Belonging. In our worship services, CYRE classes, and covenant groups, we'll explore what Belonging is and why it is important to us as human beings. More importantly, we continue to offer many programs to help you find ways to plug in, deepen your connection, and Belong here at MVUUF.

MINUTE FOR MUSIC
Why do we sing hymns during worship service? I got a spark of insight recently while attending a performance by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. As always, I was enthralled by the incredible skill of the musicians on stage. Yet I realized, not one them individually was really playing the music I was hearing. In fact, with the exception perhaps of the violinists, most of the instrumentalists on stage were just waiting, listening and counting rests. Then the exact moment in the the composer's imagination comes for them to play their exquisite contribution to the whole.
Unlike a singer songwriter or a recording star whose performance is all about self-expression, the orchestra musicians perfectly meet all their minds in a single musical expression; a work of art that none could achieve individually. So I hope it is for us. When we sing together in worship, may we be joined in voice, body and spirit by the music of a single, unified song.

EXPLORING BELONGING UBUNTU-STYLE
During the month of October our
Soul Matters theme is
Belonging. In our YRE classes we will explore belonging as a way of life that is rooted in our core seven principles/practices.
 Through the gift of the African concept of
Ubuntu we offer our young people a world view for what it means to be human -- to care, to share and to be in harmony with all of creation.
Ubuntu (oo-boon-too, n.) is a Zulu or Xhosa word, and a traditional African concept.
Our Middle Schoolers will continue with the
Heed The Call study which offers skills and knowledge to be an agent of change and social justice. Our High Schoolers are exploring a variety of topics that integrate their everyday concerns with our UU faith.
 On Sunday, October 20th, we will host a Trunk or Treat for young children from 5 - 9:00 PM in our parking lot. It is exciting to see new families with young children that are finding a sense of belonging here at MVUUF. Perhaps you have a neighbor or friend you'd like to invite!
Ultimately, most of what we can teach our young people in a class setting only becomes actualized for them as they experience it themselves and in their wider faith community. And that's where YOU have a role to play. Thanks to each of you for all you are doing to help create a Beloved Community of Belonging here at MVUUF!

Featured Artists: Diane Dover and Kay Hissong
Artists Diane Dover and Kay Hissong currently have some of their work on display along the walls of our Sanctuary. These artists have shared a lasting friendship and love of art and the natural world for over 25 years, and both have transitioned from art quilting to exploring new mediums to express themselves.
Diane is hand-dying and hand-painting silk scarves, and transitioning them even further into pieces of art to hang on the wall. She has a B.A. of Fine Arts from Wright State University, with areas of concentration in drawing, sculpture, and printmaking.
Kay has discovered Plein Air painting and using pastels as her new medium of choice. She has a B.A. in Fine Arts and Psychology from Manchester College (Indiana) and the Instituto Allende (San Miguel de Allende, Mexico).
Both artists' works focus on representing native flora and fauna; showcasing the beautiful Midwest landscapes, insects, and plants found at Huffman Prairie, Shawnee State Park, and Garbry Big Woods Preserve in Ohio, among others. Diane and Kay have studied together at countless workshops and seminars on native plants and animals, cultures, and the arts.
Make sure to spend some time in the Sanctuary soon and take a look at their beautiful work.

MEDITATION FRIDAYS
Begins Friday, October 11th, 6:30 PM, in the Founders' Room
What if we are inextricably bound to one another in oneness? What if we could feel that connection in our heart? What if we could know more through our hearts than our heads? What if there were a way to listen to what is within our heart? What if you could control your thoughts, rather than letting your thoughts control you?
 Heartfulness Meditation is a simple way to calm our thoughts, so we can feel what is already within our hearts. Because it is simple to learn, Heartfulness is perfect, even for beginner meditators. Willingness is the only thing required to start Heartfulness Meditation. Heartfulness meditation is priceless, and there is never any charge.
Please join us Friday evenings at 6:30pm to see if Heartfulness meditation might be what you are looking for in your life. Allow yourself to release your stress and be rejuvenated for the start of your weekend.

Around the Fellowship
UNSUNG HERO
 At its September meeting, the Program Council (PC) was happy to recognize Trudy Krisher as an Unsung Hero. Many of you will know that Trudy is a doer! She has served on a Search Committee for a settled minister, organized the raffle baskets for our last Service Auction, helped develop and run last year's Gifts and Gatherings, offered her time and talent to the Worship Committee and played a key role in our "Filling the Gap" and other fundraising campaigns. In addition to helping with YRE and Tornado Relief, Trudy has developed a volunteer program for the newly re-established library in Westwood School in West Dayton.
These are only some of the variety of ways this longtime member has contributed to our community. Please thank her for all she continues to do and be sure to talk with her about her writing. She is a local author super-star!!!

THE GATHERING OF SPIRITS

Our new monthly Circle Worship services take place the first Sunday evening of the month and offer a shorter and more intimate alternative to our Sunday morning services.
Circle Worship: The Gathering of Spirits seeks to provide another way for us to find deep connection and welcomes children, youth, and adults of all ages.
We had considered describing the services as "vespers", but vespers has more of a connotation of quiet contemplation, and we are thinking that a group that also includes children will be a little more lively.
The service is about a half hour, and then there is time for food and drinks and conversation. Please contact

PASTORAL CARE TEAM AT MVUUF
Many hands (and hearts) make light work.
The Pastoral Care Team at MVUUF is a group of lay leaders from around the fellowship who volunteer their time to tend to the heart of our community. Led and guided by Rev. Kellie, this group reaches out to individuals or works with individuals who reaches out to the team who are in need - for many different reasons.
The 5 W's of Pastoral Care
1) What is Pastoral Care?
Pastoral care is an ancient model of emotional and spiritual support that can be found in all cultures and traditions, religious and non-religious.
2) Why is Pastoral Care important at MVUUF?
It is the ministry of caring, responding to needs across the fellowship. A way of tending to the heart of our community.
3) When might someone seek Pastoral Care?
All types of situations have arisen prompting people to seek pastoral care support such as:
- When they are ill, have an injury, or are in hospital
- Struggles with housing, food access, transportation, or public assistance
- Dealing with emotional times in life, such as divorce, death, or job transitions
- Other times when you need help to lessen the burdens of your heart
4) Who utilizes Pastoral Care?
Anyone may call on the Pastoral Care Team.
5) Where does someone receive Pastoral Care?
Every pastoral care interaction is different, some places that the Pastoral Care Team has met with individuals include private and public spaces. The goal is to make this process accessible to many which means meeting where it is comfortable and appropriate to do so.
How do I access Pastoral Care at MVUUF?
Reach out to anyone on the team at any time. If you have one of the specific needs below, you can reach out directly to these individuals.

During an extended illness, surgery, new baby arrival (birth/adoption), or family death

RIGHT RELATIONS COMMITTEE AT MVUUF
 The Right Relations Committee at MVUUF serves as the stewards of the Covenant of Right Relations. We accomplish this through education around how to navigate conflict and personal communications, process observation for specific events, and working with individuals who request assistant in working thru conflict at MVUUF with another congregant.
How can you help this year?
Process Observer - Be part of an ongoing team of individuals that could be called on to provide feedback and observe congregational meetings or gatherings were conflict might arise. A typical commitment might be 2-3 meetings per year.
Facilitator - Be part of an ongoing team of individuals who can help with others navigate thru conflict they encounter at MVUUF with another congregant in a one on one encounter. A typical commitment might be 2-3 meetings per year, as well as ongoing education with the team.
Revisit the Covenant Taskforce - Be part of a group of congregants who will develop a plan to review the Covenant of Right Relations, gather information from the community, and consider potential revisions or rewording the covenant as needed. This commitment would be for approximately 6-8 months for 4-6 hours per month. The goal is to kick this off in January 2020.

ANTI-RACISM ALLY GROUP

WHITE FRAGILITY: ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Begins Saturday, November 2nd, 10:00 AM, in the Founders' Room
Sometimes it can be difficult to talk about issues of race. Most people do what they can to avoid hurting others in the course of our human interactions. But when it comes to race, people who identify as white can be especially concerned about saying and doing the right thing.
I will be leading a discussion group on the book, White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo. Many in the congregation have already read this book and the interest was high! This group will be an opportunity for those of you who have not had a chance to read it and discuss it to join in a supportive circle for such a conversation. The sessions will be held on the first Saturday of the month beginning Saturday, November 2nd, 10:00 AM--noon, and ending on Saturday, March 7th.

 Centering: Navigating Race, Authenticity, and Power in Ministry has been chosen by Rev. Kellie as our Congregational Read for this programming year. The book includes nine essays by different authors, each one a Unitarian Universalist religious professional of color. Each essay is followed by a response, also from a religious professional of color. This book centers the stories, analyses, and insight of Unitarian Universalists of color who are offering their professional religious leadership, and is a joint project of the Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association's Committee for Antiracism, Anti-oppression, and Multiculturalism and Skinner House Books (and it's
available through the UUA Bookstore, on Kindle, and Google eBooks).
We'll gather on the third Saturday morning of the month (except for October 26th and May 23rd) October, 2019 through June, 2020; for our first discussion on October 26th, please try to read the first set of essays. However, if you're unable to do the reading, Rev. Kellie hopes you will still join us for the first discussion.
TRANSGENDER ALLY GROUP

 This group offers a supportive place where cisgender congregants can work on reducing and eliminating their own internalized transphobia and heterosexism, without harming our transgender siblings. Meetings are usually scheduled for the 4th Mondays of each month, at 7:00 PM, in the Founders' Room.
SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE
Monday, October 21st, 7:00 PM, in the Library
 The Social Action Committee meets on the third Monday of the month, 7:00 PM, at the Fellowship. On even-numbered months they gather in the Library, and on odd-numbered months they meet in the Founders' Room.
If social action issues are something you feel strongly about, why not consider joining them? The meetings are open to ALL.
ENVIRONMENTAL BOOK CLUB

The next meeting of this group is scheduled for Monday, October 21st, 7:00 PM, in the Founders' Room. They will be discussing The Inner Life of Animals by Peter Wohlleben.

ST. VINCENT De PAUL LUNCH

Please join us on October 12, in providing our long-standing second Saturday lunch for women and families staying at the St. Vincent de Paul Shelter. This is the first month of our "fall/winter" menu and our needs this month include: hearty chili (at least one batch vegetarian) , chili fixings (shredded cheese and sour cream), vegetable dishes (such as cooked fresh vegetables or medley), green salad, fresh fruit/fruit salads, 100% orange juice and 1% milk . We need several donations of most items, with each donation serving 15-20 people. Please bring all items---heated if applicable---to 120 West Apple Street (the St. Vincent de Paul Gateway Shelter) by 10:45 am. We expect St. Vincent's to continue to be very full with about 120 in house. In September we fed 103 people in temporary residence at St. Vincent's with 34 in the women's group at 11 and many, many kids for a total of 69 in the family group at noon .
