Office Bulletin

Dear South School Community,

October is flying! We are so grateful to all of you and the PTO board for everything you all do!!! We are looking forward to our Haunted Harvest Party on Friday!!! A huge thank you to Helen Bias and all parent and high school student volunteers who are working hard to make all of this happen!!! Thank you for remembering that the Harvest Party is not a drop off event and that we do not allow masks or props for safety reasons! If you would like to volunteer to help at the party, please contact Helen Bias at [email protected]. We are so GRATEFUL to Mrs. Bias who has headed the Haunted Harvest Committee for MANY years. Since her youngest child is in grade 5, this will be her last...

Remember... new and still relevant items in either the principal's email and/or the Office Notes section of the weekly "What's the Buzz ?" (our PTO newsletter), will continue to be in bold font. Old news items that are still relevant will also be bulleted but will not be bolded, but left on for reference.

·         Quote of the Week:  Listen more than you talk and think about where there the other person is coming from!

·         On Wednesday, November 6th,  all families are invited to a Night Sky Observation at Hingham Middle School, hosted by the South Shore Astronomical Society.  Members of the South Shore Astronomical Society will give a brief presentation in the HMS Distance Learning Theater at starting at 6 PM, followed by a telescopic viewing of the moon, planets and stars on the athletic fields.   Please dress warmly for the outdoor portion of this event.  Rain date is TBD.  Contact HMS science teacher Tim Ciolkosz ([email protected]) with any questions.

·         When you get a chance ask your child what The Listening Tool is???The quote of the week reflects the tool of the week. There are 12 tools total. We will be covering two a month as a school, and many classrooms have gone ahead to others.  See old news (below) for an explanation of Toolbox...

·         MCAS Dates for 2020 have been added to the end of the dates' section at the bottom of this email as they have been finalized.

·         Harvest Party:  The PTO will sponsor the Harvest Party on Friday, October 25th from 5:30-7:00. This party is extremely well organized and run by the PTO volunteers. Please be aware that all children must be accompanied by an adult as this is not a "drop-off" event. We also do not allow masks and props like plastic swords etc...Please make sure to follow all parking restrictions on Independence Lane and Loring Hill Rd. and follow safety rules when crossing Main St. on that evening as it can be quite dark and many drivers do not stop at the crosswalk when they see pedestrians even though it is a state law. It might be a great idea to bring a flashlight along!

·         Please note that all students will be eating lunch in their classrooms this Friday, October 25, 2019, due to set up for Harvest Party in the cafeteria during lunch time.  If your child is in a peanut/tree nut free classroom, please DO NOT send in any peanut and/or tree nut foods for lunch with your child on that day.  Students will still be able to buy lunch and school lunches are peanut and tree nut free.  Thank you for your cooperation!

·         You may/may not have heard that Mrs. Cheung organized a Staff Chorus for the lst Buzz Assembly. We serenaded the students with "We Are Going to be Friends."

·         Our own Mr. B, Physical Education Teacher at SES and Coach of the High School Girls' Basketball Team, has been named Coach of the Year by the MA Basketball Coaches' Association. We are so proud of him!

·         Third Grade Field Trip to Plimoth Plantation: Last Friday, October 18, the third grade enjoyed a field trip to Plimoth Plantation. A huge thank you goes out to the PTO for funding this trip as part of the cultural enrichment for grade 3.  This trip fits nicely into their study of Massachusetts History. How lucky are they to live so close to where European Settlement began in this area! A huge thank you goes out to the grade level team and all of the parents who volunteered to chaperone!!!

·         Pedestrian/Halloween Safety: Officer John, our school resource officer, will present lessons on Pedestrian Safety to grades K-2 later in the month. Thank you also for your help by talking to your children about safety!

·         Veteran's Day Assembly Invitation:South School holds an annual Veteran's Day ceremony to honor all Veterans especially those Veterans who have a connection to South School. The fifth grade will present a school-wide program explaining the history of Veteran's Day. Please invite any Veteran in your familyor your neighborhood to be part of our ceremony. It will take place on Friday, November 9th from 2:00 o'clock to 2:30 (This may change to 9:10TBA by 10/25). The fifth graders are busy learning a special song. We hope that the special Veterans in your life can be a part of this annual ceremony. Please email Pam Graham
