Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board to hear GSU Local 15, Nutrien dispute

On Dec. 5 and 6, 2019 the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board (SLRB) will convene a long-delayed hearing in a dispute between GSU Local 15 and Nutrien regarding the status of the Ag retail outlets at Fielding, Kincaid and Norquay.

The dispute to be heard by the SLRB is focused on whether the three Ag retail outlets and the employees at those locations will remain in GSU's certified bargaining unit in Saskatchewan. The case arose in 2018 as Nutrien consolidated the operations of several unionized locations into new sites at Fielding, Kincaid and Norquay. As GSU sees it, Nutrien just moved existing businesses to new locations.

"GSU's assertion is that all of the work consolidated into the new sites comes from the union bargaining unit and should remain in the union bargaining unit, thereby continuing the collective agreement coverage and rights for the employees," said GSU general secretary Hugh Wagner. "After hearing the evidence of GSU and Nutrien, the SLRB will decide the outcome of the dispute, although a decision is not expected until the new year."

This matter had been previously scheduled to be heard and was adjourned by the SLRB until Dec. 5 and 6. Members of GSU Local 15 (Nutrien) will be informed as soon as a decision is received.

GSU works hard to enforce the rights and benefits in your collective agreement. Identifying problems as soon as they arise benefits everyone, so don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions about a problem in your workplace.

There could only be one winner of our contest, and this time it was Lindsay Hill (Local 19 - Prairie Co-op).

Last week we asked you to name a celebrity seat-buddy you would choose to sit beside you on a cross-Canada flight, and GSU members sent us a lot of interesting answers.

It seems quite a few of you are interested in sitting with Don Cherry to have a one-on-one chat about the circumstances of his recent retirement. Canadian Ryan Reynolds was also a popular choice, as were fellow Canadian Wayne Gretzky, partial-Canadian Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and Garth Brooks (who some fans wish was Canadian).

Congratulations to our draw winner - Local 19 (Prairie Co-op) member Lindsay Hill who chose WWE superstar Roman Reigns as her celebrity seat-buddy. The Western final game didn't go the way we hoped it would, but we hope you enjoyed the game, Lindsay!

All is not lost! The Riders may not have made it to the Grey Cup, but the Saskatchewan Rush season is just starting. Watch for a chance to win tickets to their Dec. 14 home opener.

Who are the people in your support system?

Everyone will go through tough times, and when you are down you need people who are trusted confidants to support you. Your support system can include family members, friends, personal acquaintances or work colleagues. These different relationships will serve different purposes at different times, because your spouse can't necessarily relate to your work struggles, and you may choose a friend over co-workers to lean on if you are struggling in your home life.

We know that venting is good for your mental health, but having a strong support system and confiding in a support person is good for your physical health, too (i.e. stopping smoking, eating well, and other healthy lifestyle options).
