Dear HUSD Community,
The first few weeks of the 2018-19 school year are in the books. Thank you fathers, father figures, and all parents for accompanying your kids to the first day of school as part of our Million Father March event. Family engagement is a major priority for our district and we want to invite you to take advantage of the many resources the district offers families year-round.
There are a number of ways to get involved and provide us with your input. Back-to-School nights happen this month at our schools. Every school has many different decision making groups that include community members such as School Site Council, Site-Based Decision-Making, English Learner Advisory Council, and an African-American Student Achievement Initiative (AASAI) Parent Leadership Team. Also, I am continuing to host Coffee with the Superintendent, with the first one scheduled for September 25 at Mt. Eden High School at 8:30 am. I hope to see you there.
Finally, September is Attendance Awareness Month. Students can only learn if they are in class. Let's make an effort as a community to help students make it to class every day to help them be successful.

Budget Update/

This month, HUSD closed the books on the 2017-18 school year. The quick update is …
- Good news!: The district ended the 2017-18 school year with additional savings.
- Bad news: Our enrollment has declined by 500 students in the current school year, so the savings realized last year will need to be used to make up for the loss in revenue from having fewer students this year.
- What does this mean?: The district is still projecting the need to make reductions in 2019-20 and 2020-21 in order to maintain fiscal solvency.

A new partnership between the
Koret Foundation
, a San Francisco-based philanthropic foundation, and the
National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI)
will fund teacher trainings and STEM education programs, and help cover the cost of AP tests in math, science and English for students in the program at three Hayward Unified School District high schools.

Grants boost child development programs

Parent Involvement Project
WestEd, a nonpartisan, nonprofit research, development, and service agency that works to promote equity and improve learning, has announced a new partnership with HUSD’s Helen Turner Children’s Center. Through its Parent Involvement Project (PIP), parents will be engaged in an innovative and multifaceted parent education program as their children enter preschool.
Parent engagement is a major focus of the district, and this played a vital role in Hayward being selected by the funder for this project. This new partnership will help bridge home and school by supporting the strong parent-child relationship the district embraces from preschool through high school.

Early STEM Education
This fall, funded by a $1 million Excellence in Early STEM Education endowment from the Malavalli Family Foundation, Cal State East Bay will lead a pilot effort seeking to provide early STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education by working with the most powerful educators of children under five: their families.
