April and spring are almost here!
As I write this newsletter, the students have just returned from Spring Break and they look less tired. :) It's hard to believe there are only seven weeks left in the semester.

The University hosted three Alternative Spring Break trips over the spring break. The Alternative Break program provides students with the unique opportunity to participate in an eight-day service project outside of Wisconsin. Click here to read the blogs and see pictures from the trips. Click on the location at the top of the page to see the posts from the various locations.

Academic Information
Most first-year students will register this month. Students who have not yet made their advising appointment should do so ASAP.

They can stop by the Undergraduate Advising Resource Center office in the Student Success Center, room 202, or call them at
(920) 424-1268.

If your student delayed in making an appointment and now cannot get one before their registration date, they are encouraged to work with a Peer Advising Liaison (PAL). A PAL is a highly trained upper class student who can help them learn to read their Student Academic Report (STAR) and use TitanWeb to select some initial courses so they can register on time. Changes can be made after their advising appointment if needed. Appointments with PALs can also be made in the Advising office.

Students should prepare for their advising appointment by reviewing their STAR report and available courses in TitanWeb, making a list of questions for their advisor, and a list of courses they would like to take. These tasks will help them complete the Pre-Advising Worksheet they are sent and asked to bring to their appointment.

All first-year students will enroll in a QUEST III course in their second year -- about half will complete this requirement in the fall and half will complete it in the spring.

Students who are required to take Developmental courses in math, English or reading must successfully complete these courses within their first 30 credits at UW Oshkosh. Any such courses not completed in the first year should be taken in fall 2017.

It's not too late to sign up for a spring interim class. Interim dates are May 15 - June 2. This is a great way for your student to get in some extra credits for little or no charge. If their spring semester credit total is between 12-18 credits including interim, there isn't an extra charge for the interim class. There also isn't an extra charge for their residence hall room or their meal plan. The only expense would be for a textbook and course materials. They can complete a search within TitanWeb to see what courses are available during interim.

Summer Session
Summer is just around the corner. Information about taking classes during the summer is available on the summer session website. Taking summer classes allows your student to graduate on time or early!

Financial aid is available for summer classes. Apply for summer aid by filling out the 2017-18 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at fafsa.gov and also completing the online summer aid application on the Financial Aid website .

Financial Aid
It's not too late to file for Financial Aid for next school year. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at fafsa.gov. Students filing the FAFSA for 2017-18 will use their 2015 taxes and resources information to complete the process. If you have already filed the FAFSA, have your student check on their financial aid before the end of the current semester on their TItanWeb account. If everything is in place and you have financial aid for next year, you can relax and enjoy your summer. If you have questions, the Financial Aid staff is available Monday through Friday by phone at (920) 424-3377 or via email at [email protected].

Has your student lost something? Titan Central (located in Reeve Union) is the campus lost and found. Titan Dollars
Any remaining Titan Dollars on your student's account will need to be used by the end of spring semester (Friday, June 2), or they may move the remaining balance to a UWO Gift Card at the end of the semester. Gift cards don't expire for five years! If your student is interested in moving the remaining balance to a UWO Gift Card, they can visit Titan Central located in Reeve Union.

You can deposit more Titan Dollars to your student's account at any time by visiting our online card office. To learn more about your student's Titan Dollars, visit  reeve.uwosh.edu/titancard.

Aurora Better Together Fund Supports Violence Prevention at UW Oshkosh
UW Oshkosh is pleased to announce the launching of CALM (Caring, Action, Leadership, Mindfulness). This campus-wide, primary violence prevention project is funded by a grant from the Aurora Better Together Fund and will be active on campus for four years. The goal of CALM is to build on existing campus resources and support services in order to prevent violence and promote effective interpersonal communication and interactions among students living on campus. The CALM program will engage all students living on campus and primarily focus on first- and second-year students through a variety of public education and intervention efforts. CALM openly promotes inclusion, civility and caring. CALM will raise awareness of interpersonal violence issues on campus and offer resources to students through the Counseling Center, residence hall programming, student advocacy volunteers, student health advocates, and athletes. UW Oshkosh is committed to engaging students in a caring and supportive campus community. Dr. Fredi Giesler, the Department of Social Work, the UW Oshkosh Counseling Center and REACH Counseling are partnering to provide this comprehensive violence prevention program that will engage students across campus.

The Aurora Better Together grant will allow UW Oshkosh to address these issues for students living on campus and expand existing campus resources. Services will be delivered where the students are, namely classrooms and residence halls. Specific activities include effective interpersonal communication presentations in Communications 111 courses, support groups in the residence halls and mindfulness training. Additionally, the program will involve training for residence hall community advisors, health advocates, CARE advocates, athletes and campus clubs. CALM will promote public awareness campaigns to increase bystander intervention resources for students who witness violence and will prevent violence through teaching students about effective interpersonal communication, interaction and conflict resolution. CALM will use social media, posters, wallet cards, campus speakers and campus events to promote its message and raise awareness about opportunities for caring, action, leadership and mindfulness. For more information about CALM, please contact Dr. Fredi Giesler at [email protected] or visit the website .
