I hope this finds your week off to a great start after we had such lovely fall weather this past weekend.
While Monday is not a school holiday, it is Veterans Day. If you know of a veteran or see one of our Lake Nona staff members who have served personally or one who has a family member that has worn the uniform, kindly take a moment to say thank you. It would mean a great deal to these people who have worked so hard and often at great personal risk to give us the many freedoms only the United States of America enjoys.
Have a great week and good luck to our volleyball teams. They have home games on our court both Monday and Wednesday. Go Knights!

Basketball Season - Informational Meeting
There will be a basketball informational meeting for students and parents regarding the upcoming basketball season on Thursday, November 21st at 4:14 PM in the gymnasium.
Volleyball Teams Win Again!
This past Wednesday our volleyball teams traveled to Westridge Middle School and came out on top with two victories. Both of our teams now have an overall record of 2-2. After a slow start to their season, our gentlemen are starting to gain momentum with a two game winning streak. These teams are continuing to show improvement as they are looking to clinch a spot in playoffs. We have two big home games this week on Monday and Wednesday against Freedom and South Creek. We hope to pack the Kingdom and see you there!

SGA Thanksgiving Food Drive

SGA would like to welcome you to the 6th Annual Thanksgiving (non-perishable) Food Drive here at Lake Nona Middle School!
This year's Food Drive runs from Monday, November 4th through Friday, November 15th, 2019. The Food Drive will go through all 1st period classes. 1st period classes will collect items, and SGA will collect the items Tuesday, November 5th, Tuesday, November 12th, and Friday, November 15th..
To make this more interesting, and to help more of the community, all first period classes will be in competition with each other! The winning class will receive a gourmet breakfast, donated by SGA. Points will be awarded per item. For example: one can of soup will equal 1 point. A 12 pack of water will equal 12 points. Below is a list of approved food items that can be donated.

National Junior Honor Society raises funds for the American Cancer Society
The Relay For Life movement is the American Cancer Society's signature fundraiser dedicated to helping communities attack cancer. From team members to volunteers, we all want to remember those we've lost, help those affected today, and give us a home team advantage against cancer. LNMS National Junior Honor Society participated and helped raise over $300 to the American Cancer Society for cancer research. We are very proud of their commitment to this event and their involvement within the community! Way to go scholars!

Veterans Day is Monday, November 11
We celebrate and honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. LNMS has many veterans but we would like to highlight Charles B. Lyman - U.S. Air Force - for his service to our country and now our community. Mr. Lyman teaches 8th grade ELA.

Knight Glow in the Classroom

Honors earth science class with Ms. Jones
Playing with glow sticks is a fun, hands-on way for our young scientists to see how energy can be transformed from stored chemical energy to light energy. By simply submerging the glowing sticks in water our students observed how brightness produced by the chemical reaction changes, depending on temperature. Ms. Jones' earth science honors class examined how glow sticks contain potential energy in the form of chemicals: fluorescent dyes and a chemical called hydrogen peroxide. Temperature determines how bright the sticks glow.

Restorative practice with Ms. Newlan
Ms. Newlan did a restorative practice activity with her first period students. She had them reflect in writing for bell work on how they could ask for help if they didn't understand something in their classes. The purpose was to help students feel more comfortable at speaking up and advocating for themselves and at the same time realize that there are ways to go about it successfully.The students did a gallery poster making/walk-where they wrote their ideas. The practice provides an exceptional opportunity for students to utilize communication, cooperation, and problem-solving skills to help them solve real life issues.
