CHICAGO AROUND THE WORLD
SFMOMA:
Be No More
April, 26, 2017

As part of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art's celebration marking the one-year anniversary of their massive re-modeling project, Judy Chicago has designed an immersive installation, employing 40 tons of dry ice which will be illuminated by road flares. The piece builds on Chicago's past dry ice performances intended to "disappear" the surrounding environment. The clouds of smoke from fireworks or vapors of sublimated dry ice, work to soften the hard geometry of nearby buildings, often rendering them nearly invisible as they are replaced by a colorful fog. For this exciting new dry ice piece, the artist's aim is to create a visual metaphor for a troubling new reality, "alternative truths."
Tate Liverpool:
Four Lads from Liverpool
June 1, 2017

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' iconic album, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the city of Liverpool has initiated a multi-site celebration incorporating artists and performers from the UK and abroad. Judy Chicago has been selected by Tate Liverpool to participate in this city-wide project. Her contribution will consist of a 40ft tall mural based on the album's song, Fixing a Hole. In designing the mural's imagery, Judy "tried to honor the incredible path that took four lads from Liverpool to stardom and allowed [her] to link [her] natural color sense to the psychedelic hues that dominated so much of the 1960's popular art." The mural will be painted on the side of a 90 foot high, early 20th century grain silo, and will be a featured work for the celebration which runs May 25 -  June 16. The preview of the mural is scheduled on June 1st.

Heritage Project:
Edinburgh, Scotland
Spring-Summer 2017

The Action for Children organization, based in Edinburgh, Scotland has chosen Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party,  as inspiration for their "Heritage Project." The aim of the project is to reach out to young women from diverse communities to discuss issues of identity and consider the importance of female role models. The participants will conduct research in order to produce a piece of visual art that represents important female figures for black and minority ethnic women and girls. For six months, the young women will participate in workshops during which they will learn research techniques and artistic skills ranging from painting to hand-building with clay materials. Their final works will be on display at The Modern Art gallery in Edinburgh beginning in early June.
Judy Chicago Art Education Award: Funded by Author
Faye Kellerman
March 17, 2017

This year's recipient of the Judy Chicago Art Education Award at Penn State was presented to Leah Krueger, Jessica Provow, and Anne Baker from Virginia Beach Middle School for their project, Creating Tribute: The Judy Chicago Project. Taking their inspiration from The Dinner Party, the 8th grade students were challenged to identify and research people who have "changed the world for the better." After group discussions about the qualities of the nominees, including NASA scientist, Kate Rubins and Olympic gold medalist, Misty May, students translated these qualities into visual symbols which were incorporated into their designs. Using  clay as their primary material, these designs were constructed into place-settings that were displayed in the students'  middle school building and will later be exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach, VA. The participating students commented that they had "never created art like this before," and found the project both challenging and inspiring.
