Media Literacy Now reports that two bills that were introduced as a direct result of their advocacy have passed this year, bringing the total to four passed laws. The two bills were a Washington bill that provides an appropriation for media literacy (the second bill passed in that state) and a House Memorial in New Mexico.
In addition, a bill in Connecticut has been reported out of committee and will next be taken up on the Senate floor. This year, there are total of at least 19 MLN-influenced bills around the country, including eight media literacy bills in Massachusetts as a result of the work they began there in 2011. Media Literacy Now advocates have spoken at hearings in California, Washington, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Mexico. Read more

New Law Promotes Media Literacy, Internet Safety in Schools
Action for Media Education is very happy to announce that the bill it has worked so hard to promote concerning media literacy education has just passed the House and Senate. This bill follows Washington's first bill passed last year which mandated among other things that their Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction form a statewide advisory board to develop recommendations about improving policies and procedures focused on media literacy and digital citizenship in all of Washington's 295 school districts. The new bill was developed based on the recommendations of this advisory board. Representatives of Action for Media Education and the Northwest Center for Media Literacy, College of Education, University of Washington served as members of the statewide advisory committee.
