A Note From Pastor Linda

Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. ~Psalm 119:105

Dear Family-

I've been working with the 9 th grade confirmation students, readying them for the Rite of Confirmation/ Affirmation of Baptism on October 27 th. One of their tasks is to choose a Bible verse- I call it a holy tattoo. A verse for them to remember as they live as people marked by the grace of God. Do you have a favorite, go-to Bible verse?

How would you rate your "Scripture Engagement"? A recent survey by Barna Group, on behalf of the American Bible Society, asked over 2,000 people about Scripture engagement measured as: consistent interaction with the Bible that shapes people's choices and transforms their relationship. They asked people 14 questions about:
  • Frequency- how often they interact with the Bible alone, in church, and in other settings?
  • Moral centrality- how much the Bible influences their choices?
  • Spiritual impact- how much the Bible influences their relationship with God and others?

I like what David Lose says about the Bible- from enterthebible.org :

What is the Bible? Our  Book
So the Bible is a book that gathers the testimonies and confessions of the ancient Israelites and early Christians who are our ancestors in the faith. The Bible is a book that, like a family scrapbook, roots us in our spiritual family and grants us an identity which helps us make sense of the present and guides us into the future. The Bible is book that tells the story of God and God's love and has changed millions of lives.
But maybe more than anything else, the Bible is a book that seeks not only to tell about the faith of others, but actually to create faith in those who read it today. Make no mistake on this count: the Bible doesn't even begin to pretend to tell a neutral account. It wants you, after you've read it, to confess just like all these other people did. So look out! The Bible seeks not just to be a book, but to be your book, to be our book, drawing us into its story, so that we might look at everything, including our own lives, differently.

Two NEW opportunities this week to engage in God's Word as a community:

  • WOW- Word on Wednesday at 2 PM (weekly- no class on October 16)

You've Got Mail! A look at the Apostle Paul and the many letters that he wrote. Next to Jesus, Paul is one of the most influential people in the Bible, reminding his church family over and over to remember who they are in Christ~ chosen, loved, forgiven and free!

  • Theology on Tap: Thursday, October 3 at Norman Quacks in Forest Lake (monthly gathering)

A minister, an atheist and a few other people walk into a bar...People have been gathering in pubs and public spaces for ages, talking about life, philosophy, faith and deep questions of meaning. COME! Bring your questions, your curiosity, and pull up a chair!

Open the BOOK! See you in CHURCH and at QUACKS!

October Book Club:
Born A Crime by Trevor Noah
Monday, October 7
7 PM in the Gathering Space

Trevor Noah's unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents' indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa's tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.

The movie sets out to understand the challenges for teens to have emotional well-being and how we, as parents and schools, empower teens to overcome mental health challenges, and build emotional agility, communication savvy, and stress resilience.  Insights from brain researchers, psychologists, and thought-leaders, reveal evidence-based ways to support mental wellness among our youth. The impact of social media and other screen time is raised in Screenagers NEXT CHAPTER and how it may impact our teen's mental health.
