Six Hidden Gems in White Plains
Here are six secret gems in White Plains -- great places to visit,
to reflect, to learn, to enjoy, or to relax.
White Plains Public Library Plaza and Discovery Garden

Located behind the Library, this newly renovated public plaza has transformed what had been a non-descript and unappealing space. The new plaza features a Discovery Garden, an imaginative garden designed to engage all five senses.
Rotunda of City Hall

The Rotunda is the City's veterans memorial. Plaques & monuments paying tribute to White Plains residents who valiantly defended our freedom in the Revolutionary War and every major conflict since that time (more than 150 years) are on permanent display, as are historic sketches of White Plains. The Rotunda is open to the public Monday - Friday 8 am to 5 pm.
Jacob Purdy Park

Located at 60 Park Avenue, the Purdy House served as HQ for General George Washington during the Battle of White Plains in October 1776. After the British failed to defeat and capture Washington's Army in the pivotal battle they returned to New York and American army went on to fight for six more years. Alexander Hamilton commanded artillery on Battle Hill during the Battle of White Plains. The Purdy House is open by appointment. Visit the White Plains Historical Society to learn more.
Liberty Park

This two-acre waterfront park on Lake Street provides access to boating and fishing, as well as kayaking in season , on 22-acre Silver Lake. Hiking trails and picnicking are also available. Liberty Park is also the site of the City's permanent 9/11 Memorial.
Jack Harrington Greenway

Get swept away by the rustic feel of the 1.3 mile long linear park and walking trail on the site of the former NY-Westchester-Boston Railroad that runs from Gedney Way to Ridgeway (0.8 miles) and from Ridgeway to the Scarsdale border (0.5 miles).
Percy Grainger House

Percy Aldridge Grainger was born in Australia (1882) but made White Plains his home from 1921 until his death in 1961. An internationally renowned pianist and composer, he was also a collector of folk songs and inventor of music-making machines. His compositions and arrangements for wind ensembles helped transform bands into instruments for serious concert music. The Grainger Home and Workspace, 7 Cromwell Place, is an example of White Plains homes circa 1900 with many Grainger artifacts on display. Learn more or a visit at  www.percygraingeramerica.org.
