PTA Highlights
Hello Parents!

Fall seems to have arrived this week along with the rain!  As we are settling into the school year, we wanted to remind you about some upcoming events, deadlines and general information outlined below.

Our "Riverside Round Up" Fall Fundraiser will be held on October 20th. Tickets are on sale now, so please refer to the blurb below for more information about the event, location, purchasing tickets and volunteering to help.  This is an important fundraiser which supports many of our Curriculum Enrichment programs (some of which are outlined below), and many other student and community focused programs throughout the year - including various wellness initiatives and help for our teachers and classroom needs.

We've officially kicked off our PTA enrichment curriculum for the year this week with a successful Arts in Education program for 3rd grade called "Play in a Day."

Don't forget to check and update your directory information by Friday, September 28th for the PTA sponsored Riverside School Print Directory.  You can access this from our PTA website  - RIVPTA.org.  All families need to go in and confirm/ save their contact information - whether you are a new or existing family - and even if there are no changes from last year.  More information is below.

Also, on behalf of the School Administration, we ask that everyone please set up an account with School Dismissal Manager - details in the blurb below.  This system will manage absences and dismissal changes moving forward.

Finally, as you look ahead to next week, please make sure your calendar is marked that there is no school on Wednesday, September 19th for Yom Kippur.

Enjoy the weekend!

Tickets can be purchased online at https://501auctions.com/riversideauction. There's also an opportunity to donate even if you can't attend.  For questions about the event, to volunteer or to pay for tickets with a check, please contact [email protected]
PTA CURRICULUM ENRICHMENT
Thanks to your PTA contributions, the Curriculum Enrichment team is busy scheduling events and presentations for our students! This year's schedule includes:
  • A new visiting writer, David Schwartz, author of How Much is a Million? (All grades)
  • In conjunction with our new Summer Reading Program, New Canaan Summer Theater's two-person adaptation of Peter Pan (All grades)
  • Educational field trips, which in the past have included visits to the CT Science Center (5th grade) and Greenwich Audubon (3rd grade) to learn firsthand the effects of erosion on the Byram River
  • High Touch High Tech's in-classroom science enrichment that aligns with each grade's science curriculum throughout the year (All grades)
  • An Arts Field Day where students can pick workshops (in the past we've had Chinese brush painting, leather tooling, hip hop dance, as examples) and get hands-on experience with new art forms (3rd to 5th grades)
  • The ever-popular STEM Fair, in April 2019, will give students the opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering and/or math outside the classroom (All grades)
  • A poetry and writing workshop by poet Ted Scheu (Grades K-4th)
And this is just the beginning! We are still adding so many programs for the school year, so be sure to keep an eye on the Peek. As always,  thank you for supporting the Riverside PTA and its curriculum enrichment programming.
PLAY IN A DAY
This week professional storytellers from the CT Storytelling Center visited our third grade classes to craft a play out of a story inspired by elements of Peter Pan in a single day.  The storytellers guided the students through the process of producing a play which includes brainstorming a storyline, developing the accompanying dialogue, movement, music and drama.  This production was a valuable exercise in promoting teamwork, friendships, and most of all, respect for each other - skills the students refer back to throughout the year.  The program also aims to teach skills such as speaking clearly in front of groups, taking risks and being creative.  We hope the parents enjoyed the final productions as much as the kids enjoyed putting on the show!

The Play in a Day program was organized by the PTA Arts in Education Committee thanks to your generous donations to the PTA.
