Community Building...and the start of Work Cycles!

"Kindness is peace, h ugs, kisses, smiles, playing, following the rules, and making friends."
~ Adiyah, 3rd year student
community project about kindness

As we close out week two of the 2018/19 School Year it's exciting to note that alongside the important ongoing work of community building, mini-Montessori Work Cycles were in play this week!

The work cycle - a critical component to the Montessori setting - is a three-hour period of time when students to focus on their academic expectations. During work-cycle the students practice what they have learned, and are often introduced to new concepts.  Please enjoy some photographs below of the creative projects and activities related to the important work of community building, as well as other moments from the week.

It was GREAT to see so many of you at our 2018/19 Open House. That event is geared toward discussions around classroom operations - details large and small about your children's school day and the expectations at the various levels. Mark your calendar now for next month's Bring a Parent to School Night on October 11th, one of the most important nights of the year! On that you will play the role of student, as your child/children walk you through a mini work cycle. There will be plenty of 'ah-ha!' moments for you as you come to understand aspects of the unique Montessori approach which you have chosen for your child/children.

A reminder that our Read Ins will begin in October. Please take a moment to review the Read In Schedule to know which Friday morning of the month your child's classroom will have the 8:15-8:45am Read In!
  • 1st Friday of each month: Glacier & Everglades
  • 2nd Friday of each month: Acadia, Yosemite & Zion
  • 3rd Friday of each month: Denali & Olympic

Sending a HUGE thank you to Hind Bashier for a yummy platter of falafel enjoyed by staff during our first Professional Development Day of the year. Hind takes the lead on our Hospitality Committee which organizes catered luncheons for staff on Early Release Days and also helps us welcome new families and visitors to the school. Sending a another gigantic should out to
Amanda Gerardi who has been working non-stop in preparation for the
3rd

And thanks to  so many of you who have filled out our Count Me In!
forms to let us know more about you and how you'd like to lend a hand to support our school, staff and students. If you haven't had the chance to fill out the form yet, please click here to download it and then please return it to school.

"To be kind means...that you have integrity,
you have kindness and honesty."
~ Natalie, 5th year student,
community project about kindness

At the end of their day, our Kinder students add small items - bucket fillers - into the classroom's kindness bucket to account for each action of kindness they experienced during their day.
  Safety First!

A few important reminders for pick up and drop off:
  • Please approach and depart the school parking lot with extreme care. There are often cars moving in many directions and with you help and care everyone can remain safe!
  • Please be mindful of any direction by staff during drop off and pick up.
  • Please do NOT use the Union Leader's parking lot as a short cut to turn around and approach the circle. Please go all the way to the back of the building, after making a left at the stop sign, as per the designated route.
  • If you have arrived for drop off AFTER 8:30am, please park in the parking lot and walk your child in to school.
  • If you are arriving late after dismissal has been completed, please park your car and come in to retrieve your child/children.

Interested in First Lego League for 2018?

For the last three years, Mill Falls has had a First Lego League Team, managed and led by parent volunteers. The Team's previous leader, MFCS Parent Celestia Lensky, has shared the following information about the League to help gauge interest among current MFCS Families of students in our Upper Elementary Program (grades 4-6). Please note, the Team will need a new Lead Volunteer Coordinator this year, as Celestia will only be able to serve as an assistant leader this year. To learn more about the program, please read the following and send any questions to Celestia.

What is FIRST LEGO LEAGUE?
Tomorrow's innovators practice imaginative thinking and teamwork. Guided by two or more adult Coaches, FIRST LEGO League* teams (up to 10 members, grades 4-8), research a real-world problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc., and are challenged to develop a solution.

They also must design, build, program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS®, then compete on a table-top playing field.

It all adds up to tons of fun while they learn to apply science, technology, engineering, and math concepts (STEM), plus a big dose of imagination, to solve a problem.

Along their journey, they develop critical thinking and team-building skills, basic STEM applications, and even presentation skills, as they must present their solutions with a dash of creativity to judges. They also practice the Program's Core Values, which emphasize discovery, teamwork and good sportsmanship.

Please contact Celestia Lensky for more information at  [email protected].

Montessori Moments...
Who are you and who am I? Above, a project completed by the Everglades Classroom; below, students in Olympic playing a name game.

At our 2018/19 Open House, each classroom teacher shared information about classroom structure and plans, as well as projects the students have completed thus far. Our Special Education Team were also on hand with information for parents.
