Health Services
|
The Health Room is located in the Attendance Office and is staffed Monday through Friday from 6:45 a.m. until 3:15 p.m during the school year.
Please, remind your student that they always need to come to the Health Room with any health concerns and to not call, e-mail or text home to leave school. The Health Technician will always call the parent or emergency contact to arrange for the student to leave school when ill.
If a student talks, e-mails or texts their parent on their own and then they leave school without contacting a staff member and receiving a permit to leave, they are considered truant from school.

encouraged to attend a presentation on Wednesday, September 19, at 6:30 pm in the Cafeteria. A discussion of the college application process will take place. If you are a student whose plans do not include the completion
of a college application, but have questions regarding post-secondary options, please make an appointment with your respective counselor.
Another presentation will be shared at 7:30 pm on the same evening. A speaker from Moraine Park Technical College will be here to discuss the process of how families finance college costs through all the available options.
Please feel free to attend either presentation or both.

Freshman Conferences with Counselors

HUHS
counselors
will be scheduling
conferences
with
freshmen
students, starting September 24 and continuing through December.
The purpose of Freshmen Conferences is to build rapport with students and help them identify both interests and skills to support their academic and career planning.
HUHS counselors believe in forming and cultivating strong relationships with students so that we can best serve them during their high school career.
Student engagement increases when students understand that there are connections between their interests and their career goals.
Counselors will meet with students during a 45-minute period, making every effort to schedule students during a course period where they are excelling. Students will be notified of their conference time two days in advance. If you have any questions, please contact your child's counselor.

Strategic Plan
Dear Parents/Guardians:
HUHS completed the development of a three year Strategic Plan in January 2018, and will now focus on implementing the plan to achieve its four goals.
Just as we called upon several diverse groups to help develop the Strategic Plan, we are asking diverse groups to serve on one of four Goal Teams to implement and achieve the Plan Goals. We invite parents/guardians to participate.
A brief summary of each Goal is below.
- Goal 1 Student Achievement: students will meet career, college, and life readiness success indicators by graduation.
- Goal 2 Branding: HUHS will be viewed as the community's "high school of choice."
- Goal 3: Stakeholder Engagement: HUHS will increase each stakeholder group's engagement and satisfaction (students, faculty/staff, parents/guardians, community).
- Goal 4: Master Facility Plan: Develop a master facility plan for the school buildings and grounds that encompasses renovations/upgrades; effective use of existing spaces; and recommendations for curriculum, instructional practices, and co-curricular areas.

Entrances & Exits
Starting the first day of school:
Entrance 1 will be open at 6:00am M-F.
This will be the only entrance open at that time.
Entrance 6 will open at 6:45am M-F.

WILL NO LONGER BE OPEN AT ANY TIME. Students will need to enter through Entrance 1 or 6.
Backpacks
Effective immediately, non-athletes attending HUHS athletic events will no longer be allowed to bring in backpacks, book bags, duffel bags, string bags, or oversize purses. This change has been made to provide the safest possible environment for our students, families, and fans.

New This Year - Grading Changes
Last Monday, the HUHS School Board approved changes to our grading policy for the upcoming school year. While it will change how teachers post grades, it will also change what students and parents see in Skyward (Student & Family Access).
As a parent/guardian, you will no longer see 20 grading columns in Skyward. Instead, there will only be columns for term and mid-term Citizenship grades as well as the Semester 1 & 2 and Semester Exam 1 & 2 academic grades. The Semester grade columns will be up to date running totals for the entire semester of your student's academic progress. At any point in the semester, you will be able to see what grade your student is currently earning by looking under the Semester 1 or 2 grade column. As semester grades are the only ones that show up on a student's transcripts, we wanted to avoid the common confusion that students/parents have each year by having multiple mid-term, term, and semester grading columns displayed in Skyward.
You are also able to click on the "Display Options" link at the top of the Gradebook and select which grading columns you would like to see for either semester. This will allow you to limit the columns that are displayed in the Skyward Gradebook.
Parents/Guardians will still receive email notices at each mid-term and term grading periods and be able to see their student's Progress Report Letter at these intervals (roughly every 4 ½ weeks). These Progress Reports will be placed in the student's Skyward Student Portfolio and will contain each student's courses and grades earned.
As we will only post academic grades at the end of each semester, Honor Roll will now only be calculated, posted and communicated at these times. As done in the past, Report Cards will be created and placed in the Student Portfolio at the end of each semester.
Parents/Guardians will also continue to get an additional Progress Report notification if their student earns an academic grade of a D or F or a Citizenship grade of a BA (Basic) or UN (Unsatisfactory) at each grading period (Mid Term and Term), as this will cause the student to lose the open Resource privilege by being assigned to a teacher during the daily Resource Period.

Hartford Rotary
Host Families Needed for 2018-2019
|
Hartford Rotary's next inbound exchange student will arrive in late August, and be with us, and be a student at Hartford High, until early summer 2019. We will be lucky to host 17 year old Monika Adamczyk from Chelm in eastern Poland. Besides being fluent in English she is competent in Spanish. We would like to get commitments from three families in the Hartford area, each to host her for 3 to 4 month. Rotary pays a monthly stipend to help Monika have some spending money, and the school chips in with lunch money. Ask your family if they would like to have this fun and educational opportunity, while providing Monika with the same
opportunities as other young adults in the home.
Monika is now a sophomore at a Lyceum in Chelm, which is near the Ukrainian border. She is the only youngster at home weekdays, and her studies emphasize chemistry, biology, Spanish, English and Polish language and literature. Her older sister studies in Wroclaw and is home weekends. The sisters get along well and with their parents emphasize the outdoors with hiking, biking and sailing. She thinks she might like to study dentistry or orthodontology in college, but thinks a year in the US will open up other opportunities for careers related to medicine. She's fine with household chores, says she is neat and tidy, but isn't into cooking. She will be a great addition to any receptive family in the area.

Arrowhead High School is sponsoring the WEF where representatives from over 100 different colleges, universities, technical colleges, trade schools, and the military will provide information to interested students and parents.
The WEF is an important planning tool for students to access a great deal of essential information to help in them in the planning process.

ACT TESTING - 2018-19
All students considering a two or four-year college experience are reminded to take the ACT test during their junior year. Students can register for the ACT at
www.actstudent.org. When registering, students will need the HUHS school code, which is 500-850. Please remember to check the website to see if the college(s) your son or daughter is considering requires or recommends the ACT writing test. The test fee for the ACT is $46.00 and the ACT with writing is $62.50. If you feel you cannot afford the test fee, please ask your child's counselor if you are eligible for a fee waiver.
HUHS is an ACT test center for all testing dates. Please check back for 2018-2019 test dates.

Michael Fulop had a hat trick and an assist while Mitch Stroebel added two
goals and three assists in a North Shore Conference victory Tuesday at home.
Pablo Bustamante chipped in two goals and an assist for the Orioles. Ethan Giroux tallied two assists.
GIRLS TENNIS Hartford Union 5, East 2
In three victories in singles flights, Hartford Union players dropped just four games to East during a North Shore Conference match Tuesday.
Lucia Barbieri won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, Casidy Horst won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 and Elly Heyse won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.
"I was very impresses and proud of the dominant performance of our No. 2, 3 and 4 singles players," Hartford coach Andy Andress said. "After an excellent weekend for each of them, they brought that momentum to the match tonight and continued
their fine play."
Olivia Carroll and Ava Schafer picked up a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles and Sarah Fagan and Grace Herrmann won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2.
The victories for the Suns came at No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles. Auburn Larson won 6-1, 6-2 at the top of the lineup, while Olivia Harter and Jessica Thomas won in three sets at the bottom of the lineup - 2-6, 6-4, 6-4

Boys VolleyBall
The boys volleyball team defeated Whitefish Bay in a thrilling 2 1/2 hour 5 set match last night which saw the team come back from deficits in the first 4 sets and finally winning in the 5th set 15-11. This was also the programs 1st conference victory in its short history.

New This Year - Clubs & Activities Online Registration
Starting for the 2018-19 school year, all students wishing to participate in activities, clubs or sports will need to complete the Online Forms through Skyward Family/Student access.
All steps need to be marked as completed including step #8 "SUBMIT SY19 ATHLETIC/CO-CURRICULAR FORMS". Online Forms only need to be completed once per school year, so if a student participates in a sport as well as a club or activity the Online Forms only need to complete once.
If the student is only participating in an activity or club but will not be participating in a sport, they may mark step 3 complete and do not need to have a Physical Clearance Form completed by their Physician.
Once the online forms have been completed, the student will then need to pick up an "Orange Card" from the Co-Curricular Office clearing them to participate in their activity or club. Activity/Club organizers will inform students of this change at the first sign up meeting and collect the orange cards before the next regularly scheduled meeting.
