We wanted to shake things up this year - this time we'll have wine, whiskey, and beer samplings inside retail businesses on Broadway.

Hearing on the Tip Credit and Minimum Wage

The Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce along with local business owners and the Illinois Restaurant Association attended a workforce development committee hearing last week proposing to raise the minimum wage to $15.00 an hour for tipped employees and eliminate the tip credit. The Chamber is concerned that the elimination of jobs may take place if the tip credit is taken away and the minimum wage increases. Executive Director Maureen Martino stated, "In an environment that is quickly changing to self-serve kiosks,  we may see a decrease in hiring in the future."  Should the minimum wage increase, this may change the way servers will be tipped out in the future. The Illinois Restaurant Association President, Sam Toia stated: "Eliminating the tip credit means employers will eventually be required to pay their tipped employees 144% more than current levels".  Please read the proposed ordinance and take action by writing the Committee on Workforce Development today!

Please visit the Illinois Restaurant Association's website for more information.  Please read this article recently written in Crain's Chicago Business.
