Gloria Andzaldúa 1942-2004 |
A noted feminist and author, Gloria Anzaldúa paved the way for a more intersectional feminism, especially inclusive of Chicana women.
As a Mexican-American, Anzaldúa was invested in
academia and scholarship from a very young age,
fighting segregation
throughout her own education and early career as a teacher. In her early activism, she was involved in the farmworkers movement and the Mexican American Youth Organization, though she was vocally critical of the male focus in both.
Anzaldúa also co-edited the highly-influential book This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color, one of the first books to place women of color at the center of the feminist conversation and several other books documenting her life as a Chicana-Tejana lesbian feminist. Through many books, Anzaldúa documented Chicana struggle and resilience in a way that still impacts Hispanic women and feminism today.

Support Increased Medicare Reimbursement for Clinical Social Workers
The
Improving Access to Mental Health Act (S. 2613 / H.R. 1290) contains many provisions to ensure Medicare beneficiaries have access to a full array of mental health and addictions treatment services. Among those are several positions that stand to benefit clinical social workers, including:
- Increased Access to Adequate Reimbursement Rates for Clinical Social Workers (CSWs): S.2613 / H.R. 1290 would align Medicare payment for clinical social workers with that of other non-physician providers by increasing the reimbursement rate from 75% to 85% of the physician fee schedule.
- Increase Access to Mental Health Services for Residents of Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF): Currently, CSWs who are not employed by the SNF to provide medically related social work services are unable to seek independent reimbursement under Medicare Part B for psychotherapy services provided to SNF residents. S. 2613 would rectify this problem by excluding CSW services from SNF consolidated billing.
- Provide Access to the Complete set of CSWs Services that Help Medicare Beneficiaries Cope with Medical Conditions: Although HBAI services are within the scope of practice for CSWs, Medicare currently only reimburses CSWs for the "diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses."
Click here to urge your elected officials to co-sponsor or support this important legislation.
