Maryknoll Lay Missioners - October 2019 mklm news
October is Extraordinary Month of Mission
Video: An oasis of peace on Lake Victoria
In this 4-minute video, Maryknoll lay missioner Judy Walter gives a tour of the Lake House of Prayer, a joint ministry of the Archdiocese of Mwanza, Tanzania, and Maryknoll. Located near the shores of Lake Victoria, this unique retreat center has become an oasis of contemplation, meditation and prayer for its neighbors, the archdiocese and beyond.

Ted's Talk

Since the beginning of the year, MKLM News has shared stories of individuals who—despite facing great obstacles—embody hope and resilience: individuals like Nazmin and her son, Ali, both living with HIV in Kenya; Lita , a woman rescued from a human trafficking ring in Cambodia; the teachers in training at the Solidarity Teacher Training College in South Sudan; César Hernández , a student at Central American University seeking an alternative life to the gangs; Pablo and other asylum seekers from El Salvador; and Catherine , the child-recipient of a new wheelchair in Kenya, to name but a few.

Each one of these and any of the more than 10,000 individuals whose lives intersect with the ministries of our lay missioners is the fruit of God’s love. Not one of them is “useless or insignificant,” as Pope Francis reminds us, but like all of us, each is "a mission to the world.”

Since the beginning of his papacy, Pope Francis has helped us get back to basics by pointing us to Jesus, his mercy, and the missionary zeal he inspired. Now, in this Extraordinary Month of Mission , he invites us to reflect on our own being baptized and sent. It is no coincidence that the Synod on the Amazon also takes place this month, reminding us of God’s call to serve the most vulnerable—in this case, indigenous peoples of the rainforest—and to care for all creation and not leave it “smothered in ashes” by our neglect.

We invite you to reflect how you are mission on this Earth. Consider how you can join your efforts to those of Maryknoll lay missioners. And let us pray that in these challenging times, each of us may seek creative ways to breathe God’s reign into our midst so that all may have the fullness of life.

Peace and every good!

'People in love never stand still'
In his message for this year's Extraordinary Month of Mission , Pope Francis writes, "I am a mission, always; you are a mission, always; every baptized man and woman is a mission. People in love never stand still: they are drawn out of themselves; they are attracted and attract others in turn; they give themselves to others and build relationships that are life-giving."

Be 'a mission' and help our lay missioners continue to build life-giving relationships throughout the world.
'The hens are here! The hens are here!'
In August, after many years of planning and preparation, the Religious of Jesus and Mary (RJM) community in Gros Morne, Haiti, finally welcomed 1,000 hens to their new poulaye (hen house).

The hen house and the shipping of the 1,000 chickens is one of the first large new projects Maryknoll lay missioner  Sami Scott  has been working on since her arrival in Haiti from Cambodia last October.

“I’m so glad to finally have them here and laying eggs,” Sami said. “It is so important to be able to produce local eggs. It provides security and income for the local women, a market for local corn producers, and fresh eggs for the people.”
