Congratulations Lori Kleiman Award Honorees!

Lori Kleiman was one of RMHCCIN's highly valued and very special volunteers, dating back to our opening in 1982. Lori was valued for her dedication to the RMHCCIN mission, hard work, generosity with her time and talent, creativity, energy and, most of all, her compassion. Since her passing, RMHCCIN recognizes volunteers who most exemplify her dedication and values with this special award.

Congratulations to this year's Lori Kleiman Award honorees Craig Ito and Bob Schofield

Craig Ito has served as a Guest Services Volunteer at Limestone since June 2006. He is known for his can-do attitude and being helpful. Craig fills in for GSVs who need to miss a shift and routinely helps with special events, particularly the Holiday Open House.

Bob Schofield started serving at the House as a Guest Services Volunteer in November of 1990 at Limestone. He currently volunteers at our Riley location where he is described as being punctual, dependable and knows what needs to be done. Bob also "carts" supplies between Riley and Limestone in a grocery cart and routinely donates items that are in need.

Thank you Craig and Bob for being the heart of the House!
Earn a Car Wash Pass + Enter for a Drawing for a $50 Gift Card

Some of our best volunteer recruiters are our current and former volunteers!  As such, we've decided to have a little fun between now and the end of September with a recruitment contest!
  • All current and former registered volunteers are eligible to earn a Crew Car Wash pass for every new volunteer they recruit. To earn the pass, the new volunteer needs to attend orientation, complete their training and volunteer for two shifts.
  • For every new volunteer you recruit, your name will be entered into the drawing for a $50 VISA gift card
  • If a former registered volunteer decides to return to the House, they are eligible for the car wash pass and will be entered into the drawing.
  • Flyers are available to download and print here, so please share and post these around your community! Active on social media? Click here for a shareable image!
So, please phone, email or text your friends about the joy and impact our volunteers have on the families we serve.  Remember to tell your friends to contact Mary Friend at [email protected]  o r at (317) 267-0605, ext. 225.  and  to tell Mary who sent them!
Operational Updates

Thank You

A special thanks to all volunteers who volunteered at Limestone during the painting project. We appreciate the extra effort it took to prepare the rooms after they were painted!

Taking Photos of Departing Guests

You'll notice the THANK YOU sign hanging up on the front office door at Limestone. We are trying a new approach to capture photos and stories of families as they check out and during their stay. As families check out, please ask them if they'd be willing to have their photo taken in front of the sign and briefly share their story. To take the photos, there is a digital camera behind the binders on Patti's file cabinet. Please be sure to fill out the RMHCCIN SHARE YOUR STORY/PHOTO FORM and have the guest sign the photo waiver on the back of the form. These can be found in a hanging plastic pouch on Patti's bulletin board. After the photo is taken, return the camera to its box and place the PHOTO FORM in Rachel Moehle's mailbox. Photos/stories may be shared on social media in House newsletters or other resources.

Dishtowels

Our supply of dishtowels is running low so if you have any extras you would like to donate to the House, we will take them! We are adding this item to our wishlist but thought we would share this need with some of our most loyal supporters.

Help Us #SockItforRMHC On Day of Change

Day of Change is on Friday, October 5, 2018 and commemorates the opening of the first Ronald McDonald House. We are looking for volunteers to assist in collecting change at McDonald's restaurants around Central Indiana and to thank customers for helping us further the RMHCCIN mission. Additional details are in the attached document. Each volunteer will receive a t-shirt and a pair of striped socks to wear on the Day of Change.

Questions? Contact Manpreet Dhillon, Marketing & Development Associate, at [email protected] or (317) 267-0605, ext. 212.
Volunteers Needed
  • Come in a little earlier for your shift at Limestone or stay a little later to help with the following tasks. A little extra time can make a huge impact in helping the House run smoothly.

    1. Food Team:  You'll be monitoring expiration dates on food in community pantries, stocking snacks, and shelving & inventorying food in the basement.
    2. Stocking Team:  You'll be restocking the guests' toiletry closet, GSA apartment, and North Wing 2nd floor linen closet.
    3. Paper Team:  You'll be inventorying the paper products (plates, forks, etc.) in basement, organizing shelves, and restocking community pantries with items when low.

Contact Patti Cooper at [email protected] or at 317-267-0605, ext. 205 for more details.

  • We are looking to grow our team of coffee cart hosts on Thursday mornings from 9-11:30 a.m. You can choose to serve weekly, every other week or from time to time. Because you will be serving coffee to families on the patient floors, you will need to complete the on-boarding process for Riley Hospital.
  • We need additional volunteers at our Riley location mainly during the lunch hour (12-3 p.m.). You will be assisting with the check-in process, setting up lunch and light clean up. Meals are already prepared, no cooking necessary.
For more information about these opportunities or if you know someone who would like to join us, contact Mary Friend at [email protected] or (317) 267-0605, ext. 225.
COO Corner  by Stacy Payne Miller, Chief Operations Officer

Hello! it's that time again where I respond to questions and suggestions from you, our volunteers! A big thank you to everyone who submitted inquiries last month. Please continue to submit your feedback to the suggestion boxes located at the front desk of each location - we love to hear from you!

Q:  We've heard some comments that Mac may look sad or depressed and sleeping a lot. Is he okay?"
A:  Yes, he is okay.  Mac is just being a dog!  Dogs naturally sleep for longer periods of time than people do. Many adult labradoodles may sleep for 12+ hours a day!  Mac burns lots of energy around the House and on Wednesdays and Fridays when he goes to doggy daycare! All of that playtime often wears Mac out and he needs a long nap!

Q:  Could the MOD give us a quick rundown of any new policies or procedures?
A:  Sure! In addition keeping the "Need to Know" Binder updated, the Manager on Duty will come "huddle" with you at the beginning of your shifts to check in with you and let you know what's new. This will start later this month.

Q:  Sure would be nice if all referral forms would be the same.  Are there any plans to change the way we take referrals?
A:  Great timing for your question.  We are beginning to beta test accepting online referral submissions via our website.  In other news, we are also testing a new way to sign in service group and meal group volunteers electronically via iPads.  Don't worry, there will be plenty of opportunity for training once staff works out the bugs.

Your Impact!

Thanks to you  we are having a great year of serving families!  As of July 31, 2018 our yea-to-date Limestone room occupancy rate was at 98%, meaning we have been turning rooms quickly and staying full.

Our Riley House has been busy, too. Day visits at our Riley location through July were 23,526 and our overnight occupancy rate was 55% and on the rise as our Houses work together to get the rooms filled with our families who need a good night's sleep. Thank you so much for all that you do!

Sincerely,
Stacy

Look Who Was Caught Rolling Out The Red Carpet

Mary Friend, Volunteer Resources Manager, caught Marie Shea, Coffee Cart Host, demonstrating cooperation, communication and teamwork.

Mary wrote: "Marie serves at the House in multiple positions.  She is a Guest Services Volunteer and Mentor at both Limestone and Riley as well as a Coffee Cart Host. When we have an open shift on the coffee cart that we are having trouble filling, I typically get an email from Marie offering to cover.  She explains that she just hates for us to cancel the coffee cart because the families look forward to its visits. "

Thank you, Marie. We appreciate your friendliness and compassion!

Congratulations! Your Crew Carwash pass is in the mail.

Remember, if you catch a volunteer rolling out the red carpet and providing an excellent family experience, please submit a nomination using the form below. Printed copies of this form are also available in the front office at both Limestone and Riley. Each month, all nominations are eligible for a random drawing for a Crew Carwash pass.
