For thousands of years, people have been searching for the answers to, “Who am I? What is my purpose? What am I here to do?” You have the information encoded within you. Lori will show you how to find the answers in an experiential discovery journey exploring the passion, purpose and possibilities for the life you’re living today.

As you explore your past, present and future, you can begin to put together your skills and gifts in creative new ways. Living a creative and authentic life means totally intertwining the professional and personal - to be who you are in each moment everywhere you go.

When you put words to your passion and purpose, you are taking the intangible and making it tangible. We will explore who you are, what you want, and how you want to give back. When you have a vision driven by passion and purpose, your actions and activities create powerful results.

When you know WHO you are, you know WHAT to do.

Lori will share how to:
  • Find out what drives you, your burning desire – who you are
  • Discover and clarify your vision (Dream) – what you want
  • Create a proven action plan – what to do

September Event Recap
On Saturday, September 7, fifteen women enjoyed a lovely morning at Debra's home in Circle Pines. Debra had invited Mary Jo Meadow to talk with us about mindfulness. Mary Jo is 83 years young and has been engaged in teaching mindfulness for over 30 years. She was a delightful woman and helped us understand the benefits of practicing mindfulness. We also enjoyed a potluck brunch and shared wellness tips. Thanks to Debra for hosting this lovely event.
On September 25, fifteen members attended our first “Get Connected” event in a private room at the Perkins Restaurant at 494 & France Ave. Terri facilitated a gratitude writing and reflection exercise. Throughout the evening the room was buzzing with conversations and an occasional burst of laughter. By the end of our gathering it was easy to ponder being grateful for these remarkable women and the connections we experienced.
Special Interest Groups (SIGs)
and
Transition Peer Groups (TPGs)
(SIGs and TPGs available with paid membership only)
Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are topic or activity-focused. There is no limit to the groups that can be created because they all originate with and are guided by members! If you have an idea for a new SIG and would like to find out if others are interested, please contact Jill Goski at jill.goski@gmail.com .

Transition Peer Groups (TPGs) are small groups who meet to discuss topics from career transitions to changing family relationships to the benefits and challenges of aging. Each group selects its own topics and shares group facilitation and guidance. TTN provides resources to help these groups get started and flourish. There is always an opportunity for the formation of new peer groups in a different geographic location and/ or around specific topics. If you are interested in joining or starting a TPG, please contact Barbara O’Sullivan at Barbara.osullivan@hotmail.com .

Just a friendly reminder:  We always welcome new women to check out our SIGs and TPGs along with our many social occasions and programs. Please remember that non-members are welcome to attend SIGs & TPGs for a maximum of two times after which, per national policy, women are required to become a member of TTN to continue SIG/TPG participation. Joining is easy and economical. Just go to the TTN website - Click Here!
Transition Peer Groups (TPGs)
NewTransition Peer Group Forming
Informational meetings were held in September in the south and west metro areas to explore interest in starting peer groups in those areas. We are recruiting more members to join these groups. Peer groups are great opportunities to connect with other TTN members to explore and discuss the transitions we are experiencing at this point in our lives. Both groups are currently open to daytime or evening meetings depending on preferences of the majority. If you are interested in joining either of these groups or have questions, please contact Barbara O’Sullivan at Barbara.osullivan@hotmail.com .
Transition Peer Group – Life Animated
- Submitted by Sylvia Mohn
Five members of the peer group met in September for a discussion about grandparents led by Eleni. We looked at the role of grandparents in our lives including our relationships to our grandparents and grandchildren. Some discussion themes emerged of grandmothers providing a safe space, a place to get individual attention if you came from a large family, and learning new skills such as games, crafts, school subjects, etc. The role of grandparents today: they want to be useful to children and to be integrated into the family.

September 10. Highland Park Library, Teen Meeting Room on the ground floor. 10:15 AM-12:15 PM. Topic: Journaling/memoir writing, led by Julie. What are the benefits and purpose of journaling? Recording/saving your story and memories.

Please contact Eleni Skevas at  eskevs@yahoo.com  if you are interested in joining this group.
Transition Peer Group – Living with Purpose
- Submitted by Barbara O’Sullivan
The Living with Purpose Transition Peer Group met on September 26, after our summer hiatus, at the Maplewood Library. We welcomed two new members and shared our summer highlights with each other. We brainstormed topics for our upcoming meetings. Several members from our group plan to attend the October 10 event with Lori Palm on Passion and Purpose and/or the November follow up event. Since this topic is so closely connected to our group's focus, we plan to continue to build on what we learn, especially from the passion and purpose assessment which will be a highlight of the November 9th follow up workshop. However, attending these two events will not be essential to participate in our TPG discussions. We will incorporate some of our favorite past discussions on "hygge", prepping for winter months, and our vision boards as well as other topics as the year unfolds.

The October 24 meeting will be held at Roseville Library in the Board Room from 6:30-8:00 PM. Janet Mandelstam who is one of the founding members of the San Francisco TTN Chapter will be in town visiting that week and is interested in attending TTN events. We will invite her to our meeting. The focus of our discussion for this meeting is "How where we grew up influenced who we became and how we are now as well as where we are going".

With upcoming holidays, our group will meet November 21 at the Shoreview Library and December 19 at a place to be determined by availability. So please mark your calendars! In January we will be back on track to meet the fourth Thursday of each month from 6:30-8:00 PM.

Travel SIG
- Submitted by Julie Efta
In September, six members met for lunch and travel discussion at Holman’s Table in St. Paul. If you have a suggested venue and time for a future meeting, please help plan it.

In October, Karen West is hosting a weekend retreat for a limited number of women at her family cabin in Wisconsin. Travel SIG members were offered the opportunity first and filled the available slots quickly. We hope to schedule more cabin visits throughout the year. Let us know if you would like to host a group in the future.

Marilynne Roberts has offered to help lead the Travel SIG and we welcome her and thank her! She has experience with traveling as a volunteer and has much to contribute. She also recommends two local companies that cater to women who travel and live in Minnesota. Storm Creek sells outdoor lifestyle apparel online only but has two warehouse sales this fall in our area. JunoActive sells plus size activewear online only.

Please email us if you would like to add your name to the growing Travel SIG membership list. Separate emails to members will be sent monthly. We may also post events on a private Facebook group site.

Please also share your ideas and energy for planning future events.

Enjoy the fall colors!

Julie, Debra and Marilynne

Financial SIG
- Submitted by Cyndy Nelson
On Tuesday, September 17, seven women gathered for a highly interactive discussion where we identified financial ideas for a 55-year-old woman who is still employed. We also generated ideas that applied to women of any age regardless of work status.

Our discussion focused on increasing savings including the use of 401K and Roth IRA (working woman only); reducing expenses by reviewing subscriptions or automatic payments to determine if they still “bring you joy”, revisiting insurance costs, and focusing on conscious spending (getting rid of recurring expenses that cost a lot, but don’t “bring you joy”). For women who are no longer working, we discussed the benefits of a Roth Conversion while one is in a lower tax bracket. We briefly touched on the housing question, but decided to table that topic until after our February educational event with Della Johnson.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, October 15, 7:00-8:30 PM at the Ramsey County Library at 2180 North Hamline Ave, Roseville. We will be in the Board Room on the second floor. Jan will lead a discussion on our attitudes about money based on the book How to Worry Less About Money by John Armstrong. The book is available on Amazon, but you don’t need to read to attend meeting.

Our November meeting is Tuesday, November 19, 7:00-8:30 PM at the Ramsey County Library at 2180 North Hamline Ave, Roseville. We will be in the Board Room on the second floor.

The purpose of this group is to increase our personal financial literacy. The knowledge of members about financial topics varies from beginner to more experienced. Our topics will be selected based on what individual members are interested in. We meet on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM. New members are welcome. Come and give it a try.

Please email Cyndy at  clnelson03@gmail.com if you are interested in joining us, have ideas for topics, or have questions.
Evening Book Club SIG
- Submitted by Gretchen Bratvold and Lisa Nabbefeld
Six members of the TTN Evening Book Club met on September 10 at Jerris’ home. We discussed the book Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Since only one of us had finished the book and since we were having such a great discussion on it (mostly the first half), we decided to continue the discussion into the second half of the book next month. Hopefully this will enable others to discuss it as well as allow us to finish the book. We all loved the author’s intertwining of her profession as a botanist, her personal life story, and her Native American culture, as well as her reflections on cultural stories and ways of thinking, on the cycles of life, and on the roles older women can play in preservation of the earth. The book is beautifully poetic, sometimes humorous, and achingly honest at other times. We shared and discussed many passages and reflected on the magical moments the natural world holds for us when we stop to notice, and the importance of finding small ways to incorporate appreciation and preservation of the earth into our daily lives.

Next meeting is Tuesday, October 8 at Karen’s home. We will continue our discussion of Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, focusing mostly on the second half of the book.

The group selected the following books for the next few months:
  • November - Spirit Car: Journey to a Dakota Past by Diane Wilson
  • December - Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
  • January - Sula by Toni Morrison (in honor of her passing)

We also added the following to list to read when they are available in soft cover:
  • Becoming by Michelle Obama
  • Silent Spring by Rachel Carson
  • The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

The discussion is always lively, the members are a fun group of women. Come join us!

Writer's SIG 1
- Submitted by Julie Efta
This group is closed to new members. Our group meets twice monthly on Friday mornings (October 11 and 25). We also have begun silent writing retreats on some Tuesday mornings (October 1 and 15).

Writing quotation by Anne Frank for reflection:

There’s something happening everyday but I’m too tired and lazy to write it all down.

We encourage and will assist others to create more writing groups. Several women have expressed interest but a leader for a second group is still needed.

Please contact Julie Efta for more information or assistance in creating additional groups in the metro area at  teacherjulie.efta@gmail.com .
Urban Hiking SIG
- Submitted by Cyndy Nelson
On Monday, September 16, Jan, Arlette, Cyndy, and Mary Kay enjoyed a walk around Jenson Lake in Lebanon Hills Park in Eagan. It was a beautiful day and a lovely place to walk. We highly recommend this hike and thank Chris D for recommending. We appreciated the nature because Mary Kay was is an expert bird watcher and Arlette noticed some beautiful orange fungus.

We are planning our final outdoor hike of the season for the morning of Monday, October 14, at 10:00 AM. We will be hiking along the Mississippi River in Minneapolis. It will be about a three-mile hike. Thanks to Jan for planning the specific route. Please let Cyndy know if you plan to join us at clnelson03@gmail.com .

Depending on interest, we could look at indoor venues during some winter months including the Minneapolis skyway system and the Mall of America.

This seasonal SIG gives us the opportunity to explore and/or introduce others to new locations in the metro area. Our hikes last about 60-90 minutes and we walk at a moderately brisk and steady pace. All are welcome to join us as we walk and talk. We sometimes end our hikes with a stop at a local establishment for a coffee/drink/ice cream.

Please let Cyndy know if you want to attend and/or have ideas for location. If you are interested in participating in this group, please let Cyndy know if you prefer weekday day, weekday evening, or Saturday hikes. Cyndy can be contacted at clnelson03@gmail.com .
