Dear Elected Officials and Communities Leaders:

As a result of the weather situation in the gulf, this is a good time to remind your constituents to have a plan as it relates to severe weather and emergencies.

You can take several steps today to lead your community’s preparedness efforts with these simple reminders:
  • Always follow the guidance of local officials. It is their job to protect you, so it is your job to listen to their warnings and obey their orders.
  • Plan out evacuation routes. Be sure to plan multiple routes to several safe shelters so that you are ready for potential road closures.
  • Safeguard important personal documents like birth certificates, deeds, and insurance policies; and
  • Keep emergency supplies like bottled water and canned food on hand.
  • Maintain adequate levels of renters’ or flood insurance;

Additionally, should property damage occur as a result of severe weather, the first step in the recovery process is for households with insurance to contact their insurance providers and inquire whether they are eligible for assistance.

Texas has made great strides in improving our disaster preparedness, and the General Land Office has a new website where preparedness resources can be found to assist both individuals and communities: www.recovery.texas.gov .

I am honored to support and work alongside our local communities to prepare and respond to whatever comes our way. If you or your staff have questions or would like additional information, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our Community Development and Revitalization team at recoverygr@glo.texas.gov or 512.475.5000 .

Sincerely,
COMMISSIONER GEORGE P. BUSH
