Proposed Research Need for Improving EDO and DOT Collaboration

An important function of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) is to stimulate research that addresses concerns, issues, or problems facing the transportation community. In support of this function, TRB Technical Activities standing committees identify, develop, and disseminate research need statements (RNS) for use by practitioners, researchers, and others.

The TRB Transportation and Economic Development subcommittee (ADD10) has identified the need for a  Best Practices Guide for Department of Transportation and Economic Development Collaboration Projects and is seeking feedback from the economic development and transportation professional community about the need for such research. This proposed research needs statement describes a project to develop a best practices guide for collaborative efforts between economic development organizations and departments of transportation, specifically in terms of improving supply chain competitiveness and efficiency. This guide should be developed based on the experiences and perspectives of site selection consultants and company location decision makers. Comments on this possible research need statement should be directed to Dr. Chad R. Muller Chad.r.miller@usm.edu.
ProMat 2017 Conference Participation by USM Students

Recently, a group of six Logistics, Trade and Transportation graduate students and Industrial Engineering Technology undergrad students led by Dr. Sarder participated ProMat 2017 conference in Chicago, IL. About 200 students from different US universities including MIT, Virginia Tech, Auburn University, etc. participated this event from April 5-7.

There are not many events where students can hear real-world case studies from thought leaders on topics ranging from the business acumen of Magic Johnson to how leading firms are achieving measurable ROI from sustainable supply chains to what you need to know now about digital supply chains and Industry 4.0. ProMat 2017 conference provided unique opportunities for these students to see logistics & material handling solutions in action.  The trip was funded by Materials Handling Institute of America (MHIA) and Gary LaGrange endowment fund to CLTT.
Toyota Puts Zero Emission Fuel-Cell Semi Truck to Test at the Port of Los Angeles
Article by Supply Chain 24/7 Staff
On April 19, 2017 Toyota Motor North America, Inc. (TMNA) revealed "Project Portal" - a hydrogen fuel cell system designed for heavy duty truck use at the Port of Los Angeles.

Announced at a press conference with Port officials and representatives from California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the California Energy Commission (CEC), the zero-emission truck proof of concept will take part in a feasibility study examining the potential of fuel cell technology in heavy duty applications.

The study will begin this summer and contribute to the Port's Clean Air Action Plan, which has dramatically reduced harmful emissions from operations at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles since 2005. "As they did with the Prius and the Mirai, Toyota is taking a leap into the future of technology. By bringing this heavy duty, zero emission hydrogen fuel cell proof of concept truck to the Port, Toyota has planted a flag that we hope many others will follow," said Mary D. Nichols, Chair, CARB.
