Graphic Design

Everyone thinks designing is cool and fun, right? However, more goes into it then just picking the right color or photo. Graphic design is a highly skilled profession. Many facets go into being a graphic designer and having to produce an enormous array of products, under tight deadlines, takes a special temperament.

IDS has had a design center for decades and continues to serve agencies with all their publishing needs such as annual reports, booklets, catalogs, brochures, displays, signage, posters, banners and more, click here. Currently, there are two full-time in-house designers with a combined 60 years of design experience between them. The IDS Design Center has been recognized for countless awards on both the national and international levels.

"Things have changed in the 30 years of working in the Design Center," said Rick Ciminelli, IDS senior graphic designer. A major shift in the way things were done years ago include the use of traditional equipment and tools such as drafting tables, technical pens, pencils, T-squares, compasses, and drawing triangles; and let's mention that logos were drawn by hand with all these tools, now that's talent. Another shift included a group called typesetters who would type all the text on typesetting equipment that ended up printed out on long rolls of paper. Sheets were given to the designers to do the paste up for layouts/mechanicals and final prep for offset printing. In the nineties, the Design Center went to desktop publishing, which made things much easier and has evolved ever since.

Some of the challenges today for designers involve more people having access to design software that is either not industry standard or have the experience to use the ones that are; and the perception is they can design finished products. Although the product may look good on screen, once printed, not so much. There are guidelines that play a role in producing a quality printed piece such as size and resolution of artwork/logos/photos, color selection, content, layout, and overall aesthetics. IDS is happy to work with you on any of your projects that might need design so let us discuss your options in the beginning of the process.

Another reason to start your project process with IDS Design is that IDS is responsible for enforcing the State of Colorado brand. IDS' authority is to make sure that all agencies are uniformly using the brand that presents a professional and consistent look across the board. The branding includes the use of all official department/agency logo lockups that each department were supplied with, along with the official Brand Guidelines that all state agencies are required to comply. IDS designers will make sure projects and artwork meet the State standard, whether printed or in digital format, even if not an actual IDS project.

Service Tip
The best piece of advice from the design team would be to make sure, if possible, that all edits to a project are made before sending the file over to IDS. Every time a designer has to make changes or touch a file, there is a cost. You can save your agency quite a bit of money if edits are made first.
