Top Ten Seniors Shine At Byrnes

Just weeks before graduation, Byrnes High School took time out this week to honor some of its best and brightest students!  On Monday, the school held its annual "Top Ten Seniors" banquet, honoring the top 10 members of the Class of 2017, as determined by grade point average.

The annual tradition also gives students a chance to thank teachers who have guided them over the course of their early education.  Each Senior selects one teacher as their "Most Influential", and writes an essay reflecting on that teacher's impact on them.  Teachers, families and guests got a chance to hear students read those essays at the banquet.

Congratulations to this year's Top Ten Seniors:
Arlind Bytyqi (Teacher:  Jennifer Haney Ramsey), Katherine Blackwood (Teacher:  Melinda Carver), Peyton Elmore (Teacher:  Dr. Abraham Goldberg- USC Upstate), Camille Fendley (Teacher:  Dr. Kim Brewitt- USC Upstate), Quinn Kinzie (Teacher:  Geoff Turner), Grayson McAlister (Teacher:  Mandy Loudermilk), Emily Morrison (Teacher:  Tracy Camp), Martin Trinh (Teacher:  Dr. Robert McCormick- USC Upstate), and Anna Wang (Teacher:  Douglas Jackson)

Each student and teacher was presented with a framed certificate, along with a bound book of all the essays from the Class of 2017.

We are so proud of all of you!
Congressman Surprises Beech Springs Student

A Beech Springs Intermediate School student got the surprise of her life last week, when one of her personal heroes walked into her classroom!

U.S. Congressman Trey Gowdy paid a special visit to Beech Springs to surprise 6th grader Kylie Knight with his "I Am An Achiever" Award.  Gowdy started the unique program a few year ago to recognize students who have overcome significant obstacles, and still strive to be successful in the classroom.

Knight, who was born with cerebral palsy, is described by teachers and administrators as a student who "always has a positive attitude" and serves as a role model to fellow students.

Gowdy presented the 6th grader with a letter and a special certificate in front of her classmates.

Congratulations Kylie Knight - you are always an achiever in our eyes!
Prom Promise Event Delivers Powerful Message

Just days shy of one of their most memorable nights of the year, Byrnes High School students have hopefully learned a lesson they'll never forget.

In preparation for this year's prom, the school arranged a "Prom Promise" event, to remind students of the dangers of drinking and driving.  Organized by Spartanburg County Coroner, Rusty Clevenger, the program uses powerful, realistic demonstrations to show students what can happen when you are intoxicated behind the wheel.

Byrnes students watched as firefighters and EMT's responded to a crash scene, and pulled two deceased victims from the car.  The highlight of the program, though, was the heartbreaking story of Laurie Lee, a local mother and hospital trauma nurse who knows all too well the dangers of drunk driving.  Lee's son, Josh, was one of four USC Upstate athletes killed over a year ago in a fiery crash close to campus.  The coroner later determined the driver of the car had a blood alcohol content that was over the legal limit.

Administrators and teachers are hoping students take the "Prom Promise" message with them this weekend.  Byrnes' prom is scheduled for Saturday night at Fluor in Greenville.

Be safe students!

Byrnes Students Selected As Teaching Fellows

Two Byrnes High School students are headed for futures in the classroom!  Seniors, Megan Olbeter and Candace Beebe, have been selected as South Carolina Teaching Fellows, a program that grooms future educators across the state.

Both Olbeter and Beebe were chosen after an intense selection process, that included several rounds of interviews.  Each will receive a $24,000 college scholarship, in exchange for agreeing to teach in South Carolina for several years once they graduate.  The seniors have been part of Rhonda Dodson's Teacher Cadet program at Byrnes.

Congratulations to Megan Olbeter and Candace Beebe!

Wellford Dives Into The Shark Tank

Students at Wellford Academy recently dipped their toes in the water of one of NBC's most popular shows:  Shark Tank!

Students in Becky Carson's gifted and talented class were presented with a big problem:  find a problem and develop a solution for that problem.  Through research, testing and collaboration, the two groups developed "The Table Tamer" and "The Tangle Tamer".  The "Table Tamer" is a product designed to keep desks and tables from moving on hard services.  The "Tangle Tamer" is designed to keep ear bud and headphone cords from getting tangled.

Students presented their ideas to real business leaders in the community (the Sharks) to see if they would invest in their products.

What about you?  Would you invest in these creative innovations?

Abner Creek Cooks Up Fun Field Trip

First grade students at Abner Creek Academy ventured out of the classroom recently, to cook up a tasty lesson!

Students traveled to Publix and Pizza Inn to help reinforce learning about producers, consumers and goods and services.  The classes had a great time touring the grocery store and learning about the services each department provides its customers.
They also learned about goods consumers can buy from Publix.

To top off the trip, students enjoyed a tasty lunch at Pizza Inn.  Great job, Abner Creek!

Reidville Rocks Rhymes With Poetry Day

Reidville Elementary School students pulled out their best prose last week, as they held a special reading celebration!

In recognition of Poetry Month, everyone at Reidville came to school with a poem in their pocket.  Students and teachers shared their poems as they munched on pretzels.  Some students even shared original poetry works.

It was a fun day!

Students Go Wild For Zoo At River Ridge

Students in Mrs. Cox's kindergarten class at River Ridge Elementary recently took a trip to the zoo, without ever leaving their classroom!

Students created their very own River Ridge Zoo! The students became graphic designers and engineers by designing a sign and an exhibit for animals that live in the zoo.. Each student worked hard to research his/her animal and wrote an informational writing poster to inform visitors about all the animals at the zoo.

The lesson was part of discovery unit for ELA, as students used the performance task to make a fun, creative project that integrated multiple standards for kindergarten.

Way to go, River Ridge!

Easter Bunny Spotted At Beech Springs

A special visitor was spotted hopping around Beech Springs Intermediate School recently, but it was all for a great cause!

As part of a special fundraiser, students and staff at Beech Springs donated their extra change to "vote" for one of their favorite teachers to dress up as the Easter Bunny.  All the proceeds were given to the school's Relay for Life efforts.

In the end, it was band teacher, Thomas Cotter, who got to don some furry rabbit ears and an entertaining costume for the entire day!  Way to be a good sport for a great cause, Mr. Cotter!

Great job, Beech Springs!
River Ridge Puts On South Carolina Salute

3rd grade students at River Ridge Elementary School recently took teachers, staff, fellow students, along with family and friends, on a trip back in time!

The students presented "A Salute to South Carolina", filled with songs, dance and recitations about the history of our state,
South  Carolina .  During the performance, audience members were guided through a musical tour of  South Carolina's history, the arts, and many important facts about our state.  As the night unfolded, students presented songs and narration about  South   Carolina   revealing how our state is one of the most historical states.

3rd graders at River Ridge have a great sense of pride for their state!  Way to go, River Ridge!

Abner Creek Travels To Statehouse

3rd grade students at Abner Creek Academy got a taste of South Carolina history this week, as they visited the state capitol and SC Museum.

Students enjoyed looking for the bronze stars on the State House that marked where the cannonballs hit during Sherman's March of the Civil War.  They also enjoyed a visit to the state museum, which learning come to life, as they were able to see many things they've studied in class this year!

Keep up the good work, Abner Creek!
