Bob Herum President |
Dear Friends,
Another year is upon us. 2017 . . . I recently asked my Dad if he ever thought he would see 2017 . . . not surprisingly he didn't. And what a year it promises to be. A new President will be sworn in over the next couple of weeks.
Various regulations, like the upcoming DOL guidelines are in flux, and the stock market, after an initial swoon the morning of the election has the Dow just short of 20,000. Who predicted these just a short number of months ago? All of this points to the need for and relevancy of our organization. Even the upcoming topic for the January meeting is timely . . . Cybersecurity is more then just the DNC concern, we all have concerns about both our personal and business communications and security.
Finally, as 2017 begins, it is a fitting time to think about our association. As of this morning, we still have 14 members whom have not renewed. If you are reading this, you are already sitting at a computer . . . I ask you to log off this site and renew. We need your membership . . . We also need to find leaders that want involvement for the awesome task of keeping our association strong and vital.
We have asked many former leaders to help as we rejuvenated our organization and they responded. However, new blood, new ideas, and those from the following generations need to start taking their rightful position in our organization. I always find that being part of the leadership team is more fun.
It is a bittersweet time as I begin my own preparations for a long anticipated move to Iowa and shortly after that retirement. Makes you reflect on one's career. One thing I will never regret is getting involved in a professional association. The exchange of ideas, friendships, and camaraderie is valuable. Today, with so much time spent on phones, the computers, the social media sites, etc., some time together with others who share in your same vocation is valuable. I look forward to seeing you on the 18th of January.

As the world becomes increasingly inter-connected via technology, the computer systems that support this are vulnerable to attack.
There is considerable risk of damage to the hardware and software that these computer systems run on as well as theft of information that they contain. Hacking and Cybercrime have become a big business and Financial Services firms are an obvious target due to the nature of the information they store and the transactions they process.
Mike Duncan and Ken Schmidt, technology professionals from Ameritas, will discuss the steps their company is taking to secure their systems and information in this rapidly changing environment. For more information

Disability Sales have always been considered secondary to life insurance sales, however, most professionals, business people, and the average working American need the coverage. With approximately 1 in 4 experiencing a 90 day or longer disability, this is a concern to all working Americans.
How can you get your life clients to sit down and have a discussion of their disability exposure? Come hear ideas from a 30 year veteran of the disability income business.

November Meeting Recap
|
by Bob Herum,
MSFS, CLU, ChFC, RHU, REBC
The Cincinnati FSP Chapter hosted close to 30 for the nationwide live VTC which was put on by National. The topic was 'Supplemental Retirement Plans for Executives and Entrepreneurs'.
Prior to the VTC, a group discussion was lead by John Gephart, JD, CLU, Advanced Markets Sales Consultant, from Ameritas. Thanks John . . . you did a great job as always. As a result of the pre-VTC session, three questions from our audience were sent to national and subsequently answered during the VTC by one or more of the panelists.
The session was fast-paced and full of various tips, concerns, ideas for implementation, and recent regulatory changes that the advisor needs to consider as they work with their clients. Additionally, the issue of generational differences within the closely-held business marketplace was reviewed extensively. The session was also approved for two hours of continuing education for insurance, CPA and legal requirements. Make sure you attend the next VTC they are extremely well done and provide a significant value to the members. See you at upcoming meetings.

December Meeting Recap |
by April Caudill, JD, CLU, ChFC, AEP
At the December meeting on December 14, we hosted Jim Aussem, a prominent Cleveland area attorney who specializes in Business and Estate Planning, not to mention the current national President-Elect of the Society. Jim provided an entertaining and in-depth look at the practical, legal and tax considerations that must be considered when a family business is transferred. His presentation provided an experienced perspective on the benefits best practices of planning for an eventual business transfer, as well as hazards and pitfalls of failing to plan.
Several of our recent speakers have spoken of the importance of Cybersecurity in running a financial services practice, regardless of the advisor's underlying discipline. On January 18, we will hear from two experts on this topic. Don't miss another great meeting!
