The PFCD has selected Senators Peters and Bishop as a recipients of the 2018 Champion for Healthy Seniors Award for outstanding leadership in some or all of the following areas:

• Providing leadership in Congress to protect Medicare Part D on behalf of millions of American seniors and their families
• Ensuring access to affordable prescription drug coverage for seniors through the Medicare Part D program and opposing any efforts that would lead to increases in costs for seniors
• Demonstrating a continued commitment to protect the doctor/patient relationship for seniors and opposing any efforts that might weaken it in any way
• Opposing across the board cuts and spending experiments made by unelected boards.
• Fixing changes in Medicare Part D's catastrophic coverage
• Representing senior constituents with individual issues before government agencies so that they receive the benefits and services they have earned
• Supporting government services and necessary funding for senior programs in their locality

Diagnostic Accuracy: Room for Improvement

• 36% of claims alleged diagnostic error (surgical/procedural came in second at 24%)
• 54% were high-severity cases with 36% resulting in death
• 53% included risk management issues involving poor clinical decision-making
• 36% occurred in outpatient settings
• 24% occurred in an emergency department or urgent care setting

Working to become a national model for quality and safety in health care is a top priority for Michigan State University. On August 31, the Board of Trustees took another step toward achieving this by approving the creation of a new multi-specialty group practice for MSU's colleges of Human Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine and Nursing.

The new entity, Michigan State University Health Care, will replace the MSU HealthTeam. As a separate 501(c)(3) organization, MSU Health Care can form joint ventures with a broader set of other health care entities, which will increase clinical practice and research opportunities. Additionally, MSU Health Care can now work with medical practice partners to provide more health care services.

Just a week after receiving a lung transplant, Claire Wineland, a passionate patient advocate who had cystic fibrosis, has passed away. Wineland suffered a stroke following her lung transplant, which caused her death, according to   CNN.

Although Wineland was just 21 when she passed on September 2, she reached and supported thousands by sharing her experience with others, often through her very popular YouTube videos. She additionally set up a   foundation  at age 13 for cystic fibrosis patients and their families and gave talks on patient advocacy, including one in which she addressed DOs at OMED 2017.

In an emotional Facebook   post, Laura McHolm, the chair of Claire's foundation, reported yesterday that Claire passed peacefully without pain, and with both of her parents by her side.

"They saw her into this world for her first breath and were with her for her last," she wrote. "We know Claire was loved all over the world. Your prayers, support and encouraging words, have been a huge source of strength for her and her family. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your massive amazing out pouring [sic] of love."

Last year, Wineland talked with The DO about her work and   what good doctors do differently.

"I've always thrived when I had doctors who expected a lot from me, and expected me to take charge of my own treatment," Wineland said. She also noted that understanding a patient's illness in the context of their whole life was critical for optimal care.

"You have to look at a patient's whole life," she said. "What's important to them? What gives them purpose? It's so important to treat patients as full human beings who have something to offer."
