More Civics Will Not Save Us from Trump

Constitution Day is coming up, but there won't be fireworks and hot dogs. Instead, a federal law requires public educators to teach about the country's founding document. But, as Ursula Wolfe-Rocca writes in her latest Zinn Education Project column, "Teaching More Civics Will Not Save Us from Trump," "Too often, our curriculum teaches the Constitution as if it is a holy text (with the framers its prophets), that asks students to memorize what is legal more often than it asks them to grapple with what is just..."

TEACHING RESOURCES

Role Playing the Constitutional Convention

Teach the Constitutional Convention of 1787 with a people's history twist. Instead of including only the bankers, lawyers, merchants, and plantation owners who attended the actual Constitutional Convention, this  role play by Bill Bigelow also invites poor farmers, workers, and enslaved African Americans. This more representative assembly shows students the partisan nature of the actual document that endorsed slavery and favored the interests of the owning classes.

Urgent: Teach About the Climate Crisis

While schools on the East Coast face the climate change-intensified hurricane, the rest of us can make a difference by redoubling efforts to teach the truth about the climate. Our future depends on young people understanding the science, economics, and politics of climate change ---- and the urgency of taking action today.

The Zinn Education Project offers lessons on the climate crisis for free download, designed for social studies, science, language arts, math, and more.
