One of Our Residents Receives a
Special Honor
|
|
World War II vet and Episcopal Home resident, Frank Mazzacua, is a retired chemist. Frank was a parishioner
at Mt. Calvary Episcopal Church in Camp Hill for many years. He moved to the EH in 2015, and has been a regular attendee and lector next door at St. Andrew's ever since.
Frank was drafted into the army shortly after his high school graduation in 1944. The war officially ended while he was en route to Okinawa, Japan. Frank was spared combat duty, but remained in Japan, his squad being assigned to humanitarian work with Japanese citizens who were in the midst of a typhus epidemic.
Frank recalls the devastation aftermath of war in the city.
Silver Quilters, a local Chapter of QOV chose Frank as one of two WWII vets in the community to receive
this gift of recognition and thanks as a Veteran's Day tribute.

The presentation was made by Maryann Shirk and Kathy Magaro who are members of a local QOV chapter.
Verger Mike Rhodes also assisted in the presentation.

. . .Daughters of the King
We were delighted that members of our diocesan sisterhood, the Daughters of the KIng (DOK), visited recently. They were in conversation with Mary Grace about ways they could serve our shared ministry at the EH. They toured the home and met some of our residents. From left to right in the photo are Susan Steffen, Carolyn Hinton, Mary Grace Shearer (EH Administrator), and Ross Fairweather.

There was abundant joy in the Episcopal Home yesterday afternoon, along with creativity, laughing and working together - a stark contrast to the dreary, rainy weather outside. We spent an enjoyable afternoon with the Mt. Calvary (Camp Hill) youth group and their leaders who were here to help our residents make gingerbread houses - the real kind, with gum drops, chocolate mints, Chiclets, Skittles, and lots of icing.
The joy on the faces reflected a sense of well-being and a genuine state of happiness. For a few hours, the state of the world was forgotten. For a few hours, our residents forgot about loved ones they had lost, or ones who had passed during the holiday season. Residents forgot about their aches, pains, and worries. There was JOY.
The two groups seemed to be so appreciative of each other and worked together toward the task at hand. Everyone seemed to be so present to the others. Their combined creativity burst forth in colorful and well thought out houses, complete with snowmen, trees, and lots of other details. It was a perfect group session. (Social workers love this!).
Joy, appreciation, and presence abounded. What more could we want this holiday season?
Thanks to Mt. Calvary youth and leaders who brought joy into the lives of others.

- May you have good memories of those who cannot be with you.
- May you have appreciation for yourself, what you do for others, and what others do for you.
- May we treat each other with kind words and thoughts and always be fair.
Best wishes for a blessed holiday season!
Mary Grace

Board of Trustees News
The Rev. Rebecca Myers
President, Board of Trustees
|
|
The Board met on November 2. A major focus of our meeting was thanking board members who were going off the board and electing new board members. We give great thanks for the service of Barbara Cross, Judy Funk, Gerry Garber, Harry Snell and Jeff Thoms. They have agreed to be available to assist wherever they are needed in their area of expertise.
The Board also elected Kathy Magaro, David Luo and myself to the Board. Bishop Scanlan will appoint 4 members to the board for 1-year terms.
The most important part of the day occurred immediately after the Board meeting when we gathered to thank our major donors over the past 2 years. The luncheon was prepared and served by staff of The Episcopal Home. The residents had been served the same wonderful lunch.
The Board is actively involved in year-end fundraising efforts, including the Thanksgiving Annual campaign and year-end appeal. Recently, we learned that 75% of our residents do not have the financial resources to pay the full fee. We thank every donor who makes it possible for our residents to live in this wonderful place.
The next Board meeting is January 4.

Please Give So That Others Can Live
|
|
Episcopal Home residents who have outlived the ability to pay the full price of their stay at the Home need your help.
Bulletin inserts and donation envelopes have been sent to your parish. Each parish has been encouraged to include bulletin inserts and distribute donation envelopes for the residents of the Episcopal Home. Additionally, you can donate online via our webpage or by clicking the online donation button further down in this newsletter. As always, thank you for the love, prayers, and support you offer to our residents.

During this season of gratitude and giving, remember our residents who count
YOU
among their blessings.

We have a winner!
We are so grateful for the support provided by the quilting group at St. Andrew's, Ship. Each year they create a beautiful queen size quilt and sell raffle tickets to win it. 100% of the proceeds are donated to the Episcopal Home. Some of the quilters popped in for a visit and to have a resident draw the winning ticket. Paula did the honors, and as you can see, everyone was having a good time. This year's winner is Ellen Rose, a parishioner at St. Andrew's.
