Volunteers - The Heart of Camp Kudzu

It takes an astounding number of volunteers to care for the kids we love at all our programs - over 400!  We dedicate this issue to them.  You'll find students, doctors, Ph. D. candidates, lawyers, business people, teachers, EMTs and more at camp.  Many have type 1 diabetes, and over 20% once were campers.  An important and emotional moment at camp is our Line Up.  Adults living with diabetes line up according to the number of years they've lived with T1D.  In 2016, that number exceeded 1,000 at each session.  The power of their example as adults who live, thrive and prevail with with T1D is profound!

Please join us in thanking our volunteers for sharing their lives for one very meaningful week with our kids.

The first few articles may interest volunteers and friends the most.  Please read on for Medical Corner and parent articles.

Learning Opportunity!

Camp Kudzu is pleased to be able to offer lots of training for new and veteran volunteers.  We host new volunteer sessions, special sessions for new clinical volunteers and we gather ALL volunteers for about 24 hours at on-site orientation prior to every major program.

We invite our volunteers to take advantage of additional opportunities offered through ACA and through Camp Twin Lakes.  There is even one this weekend!

The 5th annual Camp 4U is Saturday, April 22nd, at Camp Will-A-Way in Winder, GA, 9 am through 3 pm. It is an amazing one day mini-conference and free for Camp Kudzu people! Lunch is included as part of the registration fee.  Online registration closes on April 21st; walk-ins are welcome to register on site!  See flyer!  You can register here through 4/21/2017 or show up!

Medical Corner: Managing Sick Days and Taking Common Medications

We do our best every day to care for ourselves and our children with diabetes. And while there may be times when blood sugars are very hard to control, it's important to be equipped with information and supplies when someone with diabetes gets sick. Remember...when you are sick your body is under stress. It's very important for you or your child to be receiving enough insulin while you are sick to prevent ketone build-up, and eventually DKA. Clink the link below to get some pointers to remember if this ever happens and to hear about how some medications affect blood sugars.
Happenings and Opportunities

It's a party and you are invited!  Camp Twin Lakes, partner of Camp Kudzu for many of our programs, is turning 25.  Saturday, May 20th, is the date for a great afternoon party.  Purchase tickets for $25 here.
