WORKSHOP:
"PORTUGUESE GENEALOGY IN THE DIGITAL AGE"

Professional genealogists, Cheri Mello and George Pacheco, return to Rhode Island College to present new research techniques using online resources.

Why spend hours hunched over a microfilm reader when so much information is now at your fingertips?

The fee of $40 includes morning coffee and light lunch.

Following a general overview, participants will be able to work on their own research in the computer lab or on their own laptop.

ADULT ENRICHMENT COURSE:
"SURVIVAL SKILLS IN PORTUGUESE FOR BEGINNERS"

 

This is a non-credit, 10 week adult enrichment course for those who wish to learn basic Portuguese whether for travel or to communicate with family and friends. The class meets on Saturday mornings from 10:00 am to 12 noon on the RIC campus.

 

The instructor, Lisa Andrade Sim�es, is an experienced teacher of Portuguese at the secondary and university levels and is a professional Portuguese-English interpreter.

 

The fee is only $220 for the ten week course and includes a book and CD.

 

There are still a couple of seats available so do not hesitate to register.  Class size is limited to 10 to maximize participation.

WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS OF PORTUGUESE:
"Ensinar, aprender, avaliar: dos referenciais �s boas pr�ticas. Percursos pelo Passaporte em Portugu�s e pelos Exames de Portugu�s do CAPLE-UL."

 

IPLWS and the Department of Modern Languages is pleased to host a workshop for teachers of Portuguese language of all levels presented by Dr. Jos� Lino Pascoal of the University of Lisbon - Faculdade de Letras/CAPLE.

 

The full day workshop will present pedagogical strategies and the practical application of Dr. Pascoal's work in the teaching of Portuguese as a Foreign/Second Language. He has taught and coordinated Portuguese language programs throughout Europe and has extensive experience with Portuguese as a Foreign/Second Language materials and resources for different levels of teaching..

 

Dr. Pascoal is the Director of CAPLE (Centro de Avalia��o de Portugu�s L�ngua Estrangeira) at Faculdade de Letras da  Universidade de Lisboa and author of  the newly published Passaporte Para Portugu�s, a PLE teaching method for teenagers and adult beginners whose proficiency level corresponds to CEFR levels AI/A2.

 

The fee is $15 and includes morning coffee and light lunch.

RIC students and faculty with ID are admitted free of charge.

 

Books and educational materials will be available for perusal provided by Lidel publishers and Elena Como of Atlantico Books.

 

Registration is required.

FORUM:
"SINO-AFRICAN RELATIONS IN CAPE VERDE"

Mr. Ailton Barbosa '10, RIC alumnus in Political Science, will share insights from his master's program research at Fudan University, China on "Small Chinese Merchants in the Cape Verde and
Their Impact in the Local Community and Sino-Cape Verdean Relations". 

Introduction will be provided by Dr. Peter Mendy, Professor of History and Africana Studies. Dr. Shani Carter will present a panel discussion of students who visited China during the last academic year.

The forum will be of interest to faculty and students of Political Science, Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies, History, Africana Studies, Anthropology and Management as well as the Luso-African community at large.

This forum is presented as part of the Diversity Week Program sponsored by the Unity Center at Rhode Island College.

The forum is free and open to the public.
Light refreshments will be served.
