Message From Our Chair

Another fall, another hurricane scare. Thank goodness Dorian kept far from our shores.  Now we can focus on our fall luncheon on Wednesday, October 9 at Sea Pines Country Club. I hope you plan to attend and bring a guest who might be a prospective member. We have exciting plans for WIP so join us for food and fellowship and to hear the latest news.

This summer we had the opportunity to make on-site visits to see our grants in progress. These excursions went to the Mitchelville archaeological dig site and the Coastal Discovery Museum's sweetgrass project. Read below about how much our members really enjoyed these visits.

And don't forget our annual giving shift in timing. More information follows in this newsletter. So much excitement.

See you at the luncheon,

Kathi

Our Grants in Action!

This year the Grants Committee is facilitating on-site visits to see our grants in progress. So far visits have been to the Mitchelville archaeological dig site and the Coastal Discovery Museum's sweetgrass project. Read below about how much our members really enjoyed these visits. Watch for the next opportunities!

A Visit to Historic Mitchelville

On July 16, a WIP member group gathered at the Mitchelville Preservation Project to see and understand the archaeological dig taking place. Ahmed Ward, Executive Director of the Mitchelville Project was on hand and together with his trained and uniformed high school students, described the history and geography surrounding the establishment of Mitchelville. Katherine Seeber, archaeology graduate student from Binghamton, NY, spent over an hour explaining the objectives and findings of her team.

This summer's dig unearthed pottery shards, Civil War hat button, and shell casings, all representative of the time. More  than 1,000 samples will be taken back for analysis and microscopic examination in search of additional clues to building locations and evidence of the ways of everyday life during that time.

WIP granted $13,000 toward the expenses of the dig as well as a metal sign of historical quality. Mitchelville is a source of pride for Hilton Head Island and a
nationally significant historical site.

WIP members are encouraged to visit Mitchelville during their regular hours to appreciate and feel pride in the accomplishments we have funded.

Weaving History & Sweetgrass

Saturday, August 24 was a warm sunny morning at Honey Horn Plantation on Hilton Head Island. A group of Women in Philanthropy members and guests were treated to a thorough and very interesting tour of the Coastal Discovery Museum and its many projects. The Discovery Lab, Coastal Discovery Museum and grounds, as well as local history, were explained by Dr. Rex Garniewicz, president and CEO of the museum.

The group  viewed and learned  that  the  best sweetgrass for basket sewing (preferred term) is not the variety commonly sold for landscaping. Consequently there has been a shortage of sweetgrass available for basket sewing in the Lowcountry. The sweetgrass garden that WIP has funded is presently one-half  planted with the remaining plants scheduled to go in later this fall. When the garden is complete it will be the second largest sweetgrass stand in South Carolina.
Another Accolade for Our Chair
