On September 22, 2018, during Welcoming Week 2018, RCPL will host our first-ever Human Library.
During the event, customers will have the opportunity to check out human "books" to read through one-on-one 20-minute conversations. Our books include: Conservative, Disabled, Muslim, Police Officer, Refugee, Transgender, and more... The event is in partnership with Civity and Redwood City 2020.

REDWOOD SHORES BRANCH LIBRARY TURNS 10

We are celebrating 10 years of library service to the Redwood Shores community on Saturday September 8, 2018. Join us at our 10th Anniversary Celebration.
In honor of this milestone, we looked back at the beginnings of Redwood Shores Branch Library:
- The construction process: Construction began on January 22, 2007 and was completed in August 2008. The needs assessment and planning process with the City and residents began in October 2002.
- Square feet of library: The nautically themed Redwood Shores Branch Library is 22,000 square feet.
- Materials on opening day: $850,000 was raised by the Redwood City Library Foundation in collaboration with the Redwood Shores Community Association for the "Campaign for the Opening Day Collection."
- The opening day ceremony: On September 6, 2008, more than 1,200 people attended and 500 new library cards were issued.

Redwood City Youth Literacy Council and Youth for Literacy
 Redwood City Public Library has been partnering with the Redwood City Youth Literacy Council, and their larger volunteer group called Youth for Literacy, for the last 5 years to bring creative, hands-on programs that encourage literacy to the community. Since this group was founded 5 years ago by a volunteer from the Traveling Storytime program, it has conducted 58 programs at the library including a STEM Summer Series, Financial Literacy for Teens, Family Board Game Days, and Fun with Robots, Math, and Science classes. Their 58 programs have impacted over 57,000 people.
The Redwood City Youth Literacy Council consists of six to nine teens from area high schools. These teens design programs, coordinate with the library, and work with organizations to get funding to make all programs free of charge to participants. They have received 10 national awards for their work including Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots Club of the Month, generationOn Club of the Month, and recognition from Youth Service America.
According to the Youth Literacy Council President, "we love working with the Youth Services department because they have such a great connection with the community and all of their programs are so well organized and directed. We learn a great deal about leadership from their organizers and try to emulate their direction in the programs we design as well." The Council's motto is "Read, Lead, Succeed" because they believe that reading is the foundation for accomplishing their goals in school, activities, and life. The Youth Literacy Council will be offering a Family Spy day in October and a Family Board Game Day in November.
