Safety Drills
On Friday, October 4, 2019, the campus of Fairview High School and Lewis F. Mayer Middle School practiced a lockdown drill.

We are pleased to report that all students and staff responded appropriately and efficiently to the drill. Practice of drills is mandated by state law, Pursuant to Ohio Revised Code 3737.73.
It is crucial to be as proactive and prepared as possible. Drills, both announced and unannounced, are scheduled to duplicate a variety of real world emergencies.

Whereas practicing safety drills helps us prepare for emergencies, we spend even more time working with students to be proactive in preventing emergencies from occurring in the first place.

We promote a positive school environment where students feel welcome and comfortable, as well as physically and emotionally safe, and where students are able to build positive peer and adult relationships. We appreciate your support in these efforts.

We would like to thank the Fairview Park Police Department and Fire Department for their assistance in ensuring the safety of our students during the drill.

If you have questions regarding building safety procedures, please don't hesitate to contact Chris Vicha, Campus Principal at cvicha@fairview.k12.oh.us or at (440) 356-3500.

Thank you.

Warrior Coffee Co.
Ready Set! Coffee Roasters are the supplier of the coffee delivered by the Warrior Coffee Company. Mrs. Kohl, one of our Intervention Specialists, along with her students, take staff orders and make coffee (tea and water) deliveries throughout the week. Founders of Ready Set!, Molly and Chris (a sibling duo), are opening their Fairview Park garage and could use your support of their operation.

We thank Ready Set! for everything they are doing for our programming - including social studies visits to educate our children on geography and turning the coffee industry into a plausible career in the future. In turn, our children will educate Molly and Chris in the details of how they run their business.

This October, Ready Set! will be opening their doors every Saturday from 10:00AM - 1:00PM for their Garage Sale Series. They will have a live coffee roasting demonstration each Saturday at 10:30 AM. Here's what's happening:
  • $1 pour overs
  • $2 Ethiopian nitro cold brew on tap
  • $2 espresso shooters
  • $3 for espresso roast in a cappuccino or cortado
  • $2 hot chocolate
  • $14 each for a pouch of whole bean or ground coffee.
  • FREE sweets while sipping and sampling.

Bring family, friends, and your favorite coffee mug to 3901 West 224 Street in Fairview Park!

Polaris Info
SENIORS: Polaris Career Center will conduct parent conferences on Thursday, October 10th from Noon - 3:00 PM.  Program teachers will be contacting parents to set up in-person conference times, as needed. If you are not contacted by your student's program teacher for an in-person conference, your student's progress can be viewed by logging into Infinite Campus parent portal.

Due to the parent conference schedule, there will be no classes held for SENIORS on Thursday, October 10th at Polaris Career Center.  All Junior students should follow their regular Polaris Career Center schedule.

Parent Conferences can always be arranged by contacting the program teacher directly via phone or email.
PTA Membership
Did you know Mayer Middle School and Fairview High School have a PTA? We sure do! Our PTAs are combined and meet at 6pm on the second Wednesday of the month at the high school (Room 125). Can't make the meetings? That's OK! Many members help in other ways throughout the year or simply join to support our schools. We work to support our students and staff members through various events and activities throughout the year. You can join online  here  and go to "Join the PTA" or you can print out a membership form and turn it into the Middle School or High School office stating PTA on the envelope. Thank you and we hope our students and staff have a great year!
Do you enjoy art, music and dance or have an interest in writing, producing films and taking photos? Then join us and have fun unleashing your inner artist with PTA Reflections! This year's theme, "Look Within," calls for your own unique interpretation through the arts. Print out submission guidelines and an entry form today and r eturn your entries by November 18th.  For inspiration, visit the Reflections virtual art gallery and learn more about prizes and scholarships at PTA.org/Reflections/Awards . Have questions? Contact Angie Cause, the Fairview Park Council of PTAs Reflections Chair, via email angiekleincause@yahoo.com .
Family and Community Engagement (FACE)
Hi Fairview Park Families!

If you missed the Parent University last Monday on Technology, we will be posting the slides and resources on my FACE page next week.

Now that we are all getting settled into out school year, I thought I would talk about SLEEP.  According to the American Academy of  Pediatrics, the recommended sleep by age is:
  • Children 3 to 5 years of age should sleep 10 to 13 hours per 24 hours (including naps) on a regular basis to promote optimal health.
  • Children 6 to 12 years of age should sleep 9 to 12 hours per 24 hours on a regular basis to promote optimal health.
  • Teenagers 13 to 18 years of age should sleep 8 to 10 hours per 24 hours on a regular basis to promote optimal health.
The group found that adequate sleep duration for age on a regular basis leads to improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, quality of life, and mental and physical health. Not getting enough sleep each night is associated with an increase in injuries, hypertension, obesity and depression, especially for teens who may experience increased risk of self-harm or suicidal thoughts.

In addition to these recommendations, the AAP suggests that all screens be turned off 30 minutes before bedtime and that TV, computers and other screens not be allowed in children's bedrooms. For infants and young children, establishing a bedtime routine is important to ensuring children get adequate sleep each night. The AAP program, "Brush, Book, Bed," is available here: http://bit.ly/bedroutine .

If you notice your child not getting enough sleep, talk to them to see if there is something bothering them, think if they have had enough exercise each day, make sure they haven't had caffeine or maybe even talk to your child's doctor.

Parent Information and Tips

Personalized Learning Platform (PLP)
PLP "Views"

Week View
This is the View students use to set and manage weekly goals. Students can select goals from ones that are generated by teachers assignments OR compose their own. On this page, a student will see a reminder of an upcoming mentor meeting and a prompt to prepare for that conference.

Year View
The BLUE LINE! An indicator of PACE. This view also shows the scope and sequence of the year. You can hover over the blocks for basic information about project progress and focus areas.

Progress View
In the Activity column, you can see the activity type and course. In the Courses column, you can see a snapshot of courses with current grades and long-term goals. If you click on course grade, you can see the overall grade, project results, focus areas and cognitive skills averages. Below the Courses column is the name of your child's mentor.

College View
Early on, students use the information and tools here to set long-term goals - including grades for current school year - and directions, such and college and career.

Resources View
In this section, students (and parents) can familiarize themselves with various study skills.

To access the PLP, go to: https://www.summitlearning.org/ . You can log in as your student, with their school email account.

Student Progress Text Messages
If you haven't already, you will soon begin to receive automated text messages that summarize your student's academic progress. The messages give you tips on how best to speak with your child when it comes to the nitty-gritty of their learning tasks here at school, so that you can best support your student in their learning at home.

Parents will receive, on average, 2 messages per week that are triggered by their own child's academic calendar and performance. Messages are available in English and Spanish.

Here's an in-depth overview of what you can expect from the messages.
