I Didn't
Know That!

Okay everyone - it's trivia time again!

These facts aren't all travel related - in fact, they don't really follow any theme at all.

I was just searching the web looking for fun facts, and I thought these ones were interesting.

I found them on Buzzfeed.com, and just so you know, I have not verified the veracity of any of these statements.

Have fun!

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are more fake flamingos in the world than real flamingos.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The heart of a Blue Whale is the size of a VW Beetle, and you could swim through some of its arteries.

  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are more atoms in a single glass of water, than glasses of water in all the oceans of the Earth.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Penguins will give their mate a pebble as a way of proposing.

~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~

Of all the people in history that have reached 65 years of age, half of them are living right now.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pirates wear eye patches so that they can see in the dark.
When they go to a lower deck with poor lighting, they can remove the patch and see better with that eye since it's used to the dark, whereas the other eye would take several minutes to adjust to the change in light.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It took thousands of years after domesticating the horse to invent the stirrup.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You replace every particle in your body every seven years. You are literally not the same person you were 7 years ago.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The sun is 400x further from the earth than the moon, but the moon is 400x smaller than the sun.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Goats have rectangular pupils.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It takes a photon, on average, 200,000 years to travel from the core of the Sun to the surface, then just a little over 8 minutes from the Sun's surface to your eyeball.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Velociraptors were just slightly bigger than chickens.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A pencil has the potential to draw a line 38 miles long.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The population of Ireland is still 2 million less than it was before the potato famine, 160 years ago.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Napoleon was not unusually short. The French inch was longer than the British inch, so while he was thought to be 5'2" by most of the world, in reality he was closer to 5'7", an average height for a Frenchman.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Vending machines kill 4 times as many people as sharks.
Travel Tips
~~~~~~

As George Bernard Shaw said "I dislike feeling at home when I'm abroad."

Do things outside of your comfort zone.

You won't regret it - probably.

~~~~~~
If you don't care about the view, stay on a low floor.
It can save you five or 10 minutes going up and down during busy times.
~~~~~~

Board last.

You'll be sitting in that small chair for hours, so walk around; go to the big bathroom.

Wait until no one's in line and then go in.

Much better.

~~~~~~
All other factors being equal, fly on a Boeing 767.
These aircraft have fewer of the dreaded middle seats because the economy rows are in a 2-3-2 configuration, not 3-3.
The planes have anywhere from 180 to 250 total seats, depending on the airline, and they're primarily used for long-haul domestic and some international flights.
~~~~~~

Carry mouthwash in your carry-on bag and gargle before you land.

It's amazing how fresh and awake you'll feel.

~~~~~~
Carry a sleep mask with you.
Even if you don't want to sleep, it helps you relax.
~~~~~~

Read traveller reviews.

User reviews are helpful but not foolproof, so keep in mind the following tips:
  • Read between the lines, asking yourself if the writer shares your mind-set, or if a negative review is the result of a persnickety traveler or a singular bad experience.

  • As a rule of thumb, the more people have contributed, the more valuable overall ratings become.

  • Always see how recent the post was.  Establishments are quick to change, move or close.

  • Always look at photos posted by users; you may find them more telling than words could ever hope to be.

~~~~~~
Traveling by bus is not as uncivil as it used to be.
So before you rush to book a flight or train for short hops, check out the bus.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Watch Out
for these scams

"Buying" Groceries for Hungry Children

Asia

How it works:

A young child with a baby will ask you for milk .

You think, sure, I'll just walk to the store and but her $1 carton of milk.

But nope, she takes you to a store that sells baby formula at $25 a bucket.

After you leave, she gives the item(s) back to the grocer, and she - or her handler - gets a percentage of the selling price, while the store keeps the rest.

What you can do:

NEVER, EVER "buy" groceries for street kids!

If you really want to help the kids (or the mother with an infant needing food or milk) buy them take-away food that has to be eaten immediately.

It may be their only meal that day!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hotel Room Safes Aren't Always Safe!
Everywhere
How it works:
You leave your money in your hotel room safe and take off for a day of sightseeing.
When you come back, you check to make sure it's still there.
Yup.  There it is - all safe and sound!
Or, is it?
A new scam is for thieves to take just a few bills from your pile of money.
Let's say you put in 5 $100 bills and 15 $20 bills.
While you're gone, someone takes 1 of the $100 bills, or 2 or 3 of the $20 bills.
When you look into the safe you see a pile of bills and assume everything is still there.
Later on in your trip you feel like you are going through your money awfully quickly, but, hey, that happens on vacation right?
Or, if you do you realize, days later that some of the safe money is gone, you can't pinpoint where it was taken from, so you can't get any help from the hotel.
What you can do:
If you use the safe in your hotel room, put a note on top of your money that details what's there.
For example:
That will show anyone with sticky fingers that you're paying attention to what's in there.
Of course, you have to count your money every time you return to your hotel room.
If anything is missing, let hotel management know right away.
Items Added to Restaurant Bill
Italy
How it works:
Always make sure to ask for an itemized bill when dining in restaurants.
Often, the waiter will just bring you a piece of paper with a total amount on it.
When you ask to see an itemized bill, you may discover that an extra entree had been included by "mistake".
What you can do:
Ask to see an itemized bill, and keep track of what you've ordered so you can determine if you are being charged for the correct items.
The Pipestone Patter
March 2017
Welcome Back Loyal Readers!
Welcome back everyone.  Thank you for taking the time to look at our newsletter once again.
I know this particular newsletter has been a long time coming, and I apologize for that!  I just spent 3 weeks in Houston, getting to know our brand new baby grandson, so I wasn't here to work on it.
But, I promise, the (almost) first thing I did when I got home was to start to work on this missive!
Of course, it is now only a few weeks left until the April newsletter is due to come out, so I think I will make this one short and sweet!
The weather in Houston was lovely, and what a treat it was to come home to some nice weather as well!
We have now officially entered into Spring time!
Yeah!
Spring weather always makes me think of a little ditty my Marvelous Mother used to quote on beautiful spring days.
     Spring is sprung, the grass is riz.
     I wonder where the birdies is?
     They say the birds are on the wing - but how absurd.
     I always thought the wing was on the bird!
Does anyone else remember this piece?
I have seen the poem attributed to Ogden Nash - as well as to ee cum
mings - but looking at it now, I kind of think it's much more likely it was written by the:
"Candy is Dandy - But Liquor is Quicker" author.
What do you think?
Personally, I'm just going to continue to attribute it to my Mom.
Happy Spring Everyone!
Tales from the Road
Everything is Better in the Sun!
Ah, sunshine - soft sand - warm water!
What could be better?
Oh no!
Doctors, dentists, scalpels and drills!
What could be worse?
But, what if you could combine these two images?
Does the thought of healing on the beach, with your toes in the sand, sound better than healing on your couch with a remote control?
We think so!
Now, this story isn't so much about a trip we have taken - but more about a trip we could take.  And so could you!
A while ago, my Wonderful Husband and I were at a trade show, and we met the people who conceived the idea of combining medical procedures with vacation destinations, creating an exciting new business.
Did you know that in 2014, over 52,000 Canadians left the country for non-emergency medical treatments?
And in 2016, 11 million people worldwide did the same thing!
Travelling abroad for medical or dental procedures can be less expensive, more enjoyable and cut way down on the time you have to wait to in order to get your procedure done.
And now, there is a company that makes it easier than ever to do just that.  We got to talking with Tanya Greffard and T Stoodley, co-founders of Global Health Shift Corp., and they explained how their business works.
Honestly, we thought it sounded like a great idea!
Procedures can include Dental, Cosmetic Surgery, Weight Loss and Orthopedics, to mention just some of what is available.
This company makes all the arrangements for you - from flights and accommodations, to doctors and procedures.  They can even arrange insurance and financing!
And, it's a Canadian company, so they understand how our healthcare system works.
We were very interested in the concept, and we thought you might be too; so I thought I would bring you some information via our Newsletter.
But, enough talk from me.
Why not let Tanya tell you what Global Health Shift is all about?
Handy Gadget
Ameribag Baglett
Sometimes, we don't want a great big daybag to carry around.
Sometimes, we just want something small and compact to carry a few essentials in.
Maybe you're going to dinner, or a show, or just taking in some sight-s
eeing before you turn in for the night.
For times like these, the Ameribag Baglett is just what you need!
A Baglett is the perfect combination of fashion and function, making style effortless.
Try wearing cross-body, over either shoulder or adjust strap and wear around the waist like a fanny pack.
This compact version of our ergonomic shaped Healthy Back Bag is a great cross-body design for lightweight and hands-free carry!
Oh, and if you have children that like to carry their own bag with them, this is the ideal solution!
It's small enough so it doesn't overwhelm them, but looks and functions like a real purse.
And how cute is it for Mother and Daughter to have matching bags?  Or at least matching styles of bags?
