2018 Elected Officials Meet & Greet Recap

More than 200 people came out to La Palapa Grill & Cantina in Ellicott City last Thursday to network with members, elected officials and candidates for office in Howard County. It is election season, so the event provided a unique opportunity for our Chamber members and guests to speak face to face with the people who represent us and make the decisions that affect our business community.
The food was delicious, the weather was great and the lively crowd spent hours making connections and learning more about the candidates hoping to win votes this November.

Thank you to Comcast, our Premier Sponsor for the event, and all of our Annual Partners who make events like the Elected Officials Meet & Greet possible.

You can check out additional photos from the 2018 Elected Officials Meet & Greet on our  Recent Events Photo Gallery page.
Kittleman and Ball To Take the Stage at Candidate Forum

If you weren't able to make it to last week's Elected Officials Meet & Greet, there are still plenty of opportunities to get to know more about where the candidates stand ahead of November.

We are just two weeks away from the Howard County Executive Candidate Forum where Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman and Howard County Councilmember Calvin Ball (running for County Executive) will answer questions and discuss the policies that affect our business community the most. The discussion will be moderated by   WJZ-TV Anchor Vic Carter.
Has Your Business Been Affected by HB-1?

Speaking of issues affecting our business community, the Maryland Chamber of Commerce is collecting feedback on the affects of  HB-1, also known as the Sick & Safe Leave Act, from businesses and we strongly encourage you to respond! The Maryland Chamber is looking for real-life examples of problems with the 2017 Sick and Safe Leave Act that they plan to use to help amend some of the more onerous parts of the legislation. You can find the questionnaire  here.

New Five-Year Flood Mitigation Strategy Announced for Ellicott City

Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman and Councilmember Jon Weinstein have announced a new five-year strategy to mitigate flooding in Ellicott City, in an effort to address the most immediate life safety threat on the town's lower Main Street within one year. The strategy includes the acquisition and removal of ten buildings on the south side of Main Street to create a public open space amenity with a wider, deeper river channel in their place. You can see the news conference where the announcement of the new plan was made here.

The Howard County Department of Planning and Zoning will hold a public information meeting to discuss the considerations that led to the new plan on September 12th at 6:30PM in the Banneker Room at the George Howard Building in Ellicott City.
