We have completed seven of the nine school weeks for the 1st quarter of
2019-2020. As there is no school on Friday, October 18th for students, this will be our last full week of the quarter. I encourage all of our Knights to turn in any missing assignments as soon as possible as we want every student to earn the grades they are a capable of during these first nine weeks.
The OCPS Parent Academy is hosting its first virtual event next Thursday evening from 6-7 PM. The topic will be "Digital Citizenship." If you have yet to participate in one of these special online events, I encourage you to invest 1 hour on Thursday to do so. Extremely well done, there are but 4 offered this school year and they are worth the nominal time investment if you have a student at Lake Nona -

Finally, please remember that this week is
Yearbook Spirit Week (details below) and that

During National Yearbook Week our school will also celebrate Spirit Week, October 7-11, where students can follow a dress theme each day. Be creative and have fun!

The Drama Club is off to a great start with its 120 members! September was an exciting month!
Throughout the year, students in the club will take masterclasses with Orlando industry professionals. September's class was led by Julie Woods-Robinson and Jordan Robinson from "Book to Tape" acting studio. Both artists graduated from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. Julie went on to pursue a master's degree in Theatre for Young Audiences at UCF. Jordan is in the Blue Man Group and performed with the group in New York City, Las Vegas, and now here at Universal. Some of Jordan's film credits include: The Walking Dead, Nashville, and The Hunger Games. Julie performs as Nemo in Finding Nemo the Musical at Walt Disney World and is a teaching artist with The Orlando REP. Our guest artists taught the students in the Drama Club all about acting for the camera and how to submit for professional film auditions!

Lake Nona Middle School is once again a HERO school!
 HERO encourages positive student behavior choices, but tracks all behaviors. When students demonstrate HERO behaviors, they may earn points toward exciting incentives. We invite students and parents to register your own HERO account so we may keep the lines of communication between home and school open.
Once you register online, you may download the HERO app to receive push notifications about your student's HERO behavior throughout the day. Students and parents/guardians will each have a unique HERO login account.
To register, follow these easy steps:
1) Go to https://access.heropowered.com
2) Select the parent or student button
3) Click "Create An Account"
4) Enter name, your email address, choose a password, click "Create user"
5) Click "Add Student"
6) Choose "No" when asked if you have been provided with a key.
7) Add your student by using their ID Number, Date of Birth, and Last Name.
Download the Hero App
Once you register online, you may download the HERO app from the app-store or Google Play stores to keep track of HERO behavior history and Hero point balances.

8th Grade Baby Photo Request
This year, we would like to feature the eighth graders' baby photos at the 8th Grade Formal and as part of the 2020 yearbook. In the yearbook, we are planning to include a feature page "looking back" at the eighth graders as babies. Please email your cutest baby photo with your child's name to:

Congratulations to our very own Mrs. Huerta-Kirkland. She was honored by OCPS for her unselfish outreach work with the Latin American Community. She works tirelessly helping students and their parents learn and master the English Language.

Soccer season comes to an end.
Boys Team Recap
On Monday our gentlemen traveled to Corner Lake for the first round of playoffs. After a full 40 minutes of play, the game was tied at 0-0. We went into overtime and it was not until the very last minute that Corner Lake snuck the game winning goal in against our Knights. Our gentlemen had many good looks and shots on goal, just weren't able to convert. They fought hard this game and all season long.
We are extremely proud of them and Coach Jones for their efforts this season.
Girls Team Recap
Our Lady Knights played at home on Wednesday against Timber Springs for their first playoff game as they had a bye on Monday. Very similar to our boy's game, much of the game remain tied at zero. During the end of the second half one of our girls committed a foul; which allowed Timber Springs the opportunity to score their only goal of the game defeating our girls 1-0 on a penalty kick. Our lady Knights finished with an overall record of 6-2 and were the division runner up. They showed tremendous improvement throughout the season and did an exceptional job.

Mr. Rivera dressed as Thomas Jefferson as he reviewed The Constitution in his 7th grade Civics class.
Did you know President Jefferson was obsessed with books? After the Library of Congress was raided by the British in 1814, Jefferson offered his personal library, which contained almost 6,500 volumes, as a replacement.
