District Honors Teacher, Athletes At Board Meeting
District Five's Board of Trustees took time out at its March meeting to give special recognition to one of the district's best educators.
Dan Douglas, of River Ridge Elementary School, was recognized as a "Five's Finest" teacher. The honor goes to teachers who go "above and beyond" both inside, and outside, the classroom to make a difference in the lives of their students and in their schools.
Douglas is an ESOL teacher at River Ridge and works hard to collaborate with teachers as a spokesman for non-English speaking families. He was instrumental in implementing the school's WIDA procedures, and has educated the faculty on the services and resources that ESOL students need to be successful. Dan also regularly volunteers for school events, helping out wherever he is needed. Congratulations, Dan Douglas! Some of the District's most accomplished athletes also received recognition this month, for excelling in winter sports this year.
Athletes were honored from the Byrnes High School boys and girls basketball teams, Byrnes wrestling team, Florence Chapel Middle School girls and boys basketball teams, D.R. Hill Middle School girls and boys basketball teams, and District Five middle school wrestling team.
Congratulations to these recognized athletes: Hayden Brown, Cha'Kiedrick Morgan, Jada Burton, Kaitlin Dogan, Mone'ya Manuel, Daniel Kitts, Addison Christopher, Nick Fazzone, Andrew Parnell, Nick Murray, David Hunsberger, Chris Compton, Jovanny Malpica, CJ Heiselman, Gavin Brown, Bryson Beaudin, Laurin Nodine, Najah Gilliam, Emmalee Dobson, Messiah Harris, Adrianna Scott, Nana Burris and Dustin Gillum.
The Florence Chapel Middle School girls basketball team also received recognition for its undefeated season in the Peachtree Conference. Byrnes' wrestling team was honored for receiving the title of Spartanburg County Champions.
Way to go, District Five athletes!

Lyman Students Break Record With Reading Service Project
Students at
Lyman Elementary School have opened up a *new chapter*, on a traditional service project, and shown what it really means to give back to their community!
For another year, 4th grade students at
Lyman participated in their annual project, "Read To Feed The Hungry", benefiting the Greer Soup Kitchen and Middle Tyger Community Center.
Teacher,
Patti Simmons, started the project back in 2002 and it has grown every year. Students set a goal of reading a certain number of books during a 2-week "reading blitz", and then collect pledges from friends and family members. The idea is to collect so many canned food items for each book they read.
Then, last Friday, the entire 4th grade showed up at the Greer Soup Kitchen to deliver the results of their hard work. The final result: they collected more than 10,000 cans!!! The much needed food will go to stock the kitchen's pantry and feed homeless residents and families in and around Greer for months to come.
Amazing job,
Lyman! We are so proud of you!
