Principal's Message
December 15, 2017
Dear Families and Friends of OLQP:
In spite of all December brings to distract staff and students from the work of learning, everyone at OLQP is forging ahead. Robotics teams competed in the First Lego League's qualifying meet in Sugarland. Middle school students are meeting with mentors to review and improve their science fair projects. They are also using the program, Tinkercad, to design a three dimensional children's toy that can be produced by the school's 3D printers. Benchmark tests have been administered in math. The OLQP Select Choir is singing in area churches and visiting Oak Village Health Care. Students worked to qualify for and compete in the OLQP Spelling Bee. Products from enrichment activities and projects continue to fill the halls with creative artwork, writing, and reports.
What a blessing it is to be in a school where we can express our Faith! At morning prayer, we talked about how the children could give a great gift to their parents, the community, and to the Holy Family. For those who attended the OLQP Christmas Concert, you were able to receive that special gift as our students celebrated the true reason for this beautiful season in Word and song. The joy in the room was palpable. That is as it should be. Hearts are touched by the innocence and purity of children singing and praising God. A lot of us left the program singing:
"Christmas praise is in the air, alleluia
 Children dancing everywhere, alleluia
All happy children, dance for the newborn King
Love and joy forever, to the earth He brings
Hey, hey, hey, la, la, la, la .Hey, hey, hey, alleluia"

Thank you for being part of the mission and ministry of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic School.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,
Mrs. Marianne Mechura, M.Ed.
Counting our Blessings...

Did you Know?
Can You Spell "Merengue?"
Each year, OLQP participates in both the archdiocesan and county spelling bees. The qualifying event for both spelling bees was on Thursday, Dec. 14. The lower elementary competition went 15 rounds. The middle school competition went 6 rounds. The finalists in the lower elementary round were Lyndon Hall, Michaela Gutermuth, and Aryahi Kadiyala. The finalists in middle school were Saylor Sherrodd, Morgan Buchta, Juia Duran, and Hannah Nguyen.
Congratulations to all of the participants and to the finalists! By the way, merengue is a form of dance. And, yes, the word was spelled correctly by Morgan Buchta. J
  Robots are Here!
OLQP offers both a robotics class and Robotics Teams. The Robotics Teams recently competed in the First Lego League qualifying competition in Sugarland. There were 27 teams represented. Each team came prepared with the robot they built and programmed to complete 13 missions as well as a report based on the theme of hydrodynamics. Each team had to run their robot through the missions, present the report and skits, and be interviewed by the judges. Additionally, the team has to complete an impromptu project in 5 minutes during the competition. The students had much to say about the experience:
  • "It was a great learning experience. The robot game was the best!" Josh Warren
  • "I think that the competition is a great way to meet new people in your community that are around the same age and are interested in the same things. My favorite part of the competition was being with my team outside of school and going to core values to work with each other on something new." Ella Mulholland
  • "I liked to be able to build and modify the robots." Nathan Hulvey
  •  "It was challenging but it pushed our limits." Cristian Finley
News You Can Use...
Christmas Celebrations come to OLQP on
Friday, Dec. 22!
Friday will be a busy day next week. We will start the day, as usual, in Marian Hall with prayer. Prayer will be followed by an old fashioned Christmas carol sing-along led by Student Council. Classes will be dismissed to homeroom where the teacher will complete academic work, start art project, etc. At 10:00, we re-convene for Mass. At 11:00, class celebrations may begin. Teachers collaborate with room parents to provide age-appropriate activities and lunch for the students. Dismissal is at 1:00 p.m. Extended day care is provided until 6:00 p.m. Call the office if you have any questions!
Please contact your child's homeroom teacher if you have any questions about the day.
