Back to School Success

The beginning of the school year is an exciting time, but it can also be filled with stress and anxiety. Apprehension and fear of the unknown can make the back to school event a challenging one for the entire family.

To support this transition, ensure that children have access to caring adults, the centerpieces of children's development, who give positive and productive guidance. To promote intellectual and emotional development, children need physical and psychological safety at home, at school and in the community. This "safe place" provides an environment that supports and encourages inquiry, exploration, and play without fear of harm.

Healthy and well-nourished children are more able to develop their minds and bodies to concentrate, learn and thrive throughout their school years. The following steps help prepare families to ease into the transition as smoothly as possible:

1) Set a Routine -Setting routines for mornings and evenings, including nutritious meals and an early bedtime, helps children cope with stressors. Routines also help to make children feel comfortable and stable in their environment, resulting in more cooperative behavior both in and out of school.

Back to School Resources
We would like to wish all students, teachers and staff members the best of luck for a successful 2018-2019 school year!  Below please find back to school resources to assist with the transition.

Youth Thrive Summit
Our annual Trauma Informed Care & Positive Youth Development Summit was held on June 22, 2018.  Attendees learned about the five Youth Thrive Protective and Promotive Factors that increase the likelihood that adolescents will develop into healthy, thriving adults; and how a trauma informed community can create positive outcomes for youth.

Our keynote address was delivered by Jarred Vermillion, QBE & James Clark, QBE. From darkness to greatness, James and Jarred shared their ICAN journeys. From a life sentence of poverty, system involvement, substance use and violence to greatness.

Additionally, members of our Brevard Youth Leadership Council and supportive adults shared their experiences in an engaging panel discussion.  Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from Angela Oliver-Burgess, with Smile for Budgie, regarding the Brevard Youth Leadership Academy and Council, Christine Williams-Kelly, with Brevard Family Partnership, on the Voice and Choice Approach to Care, and Mike Williams, with Florida Coalition for Children, on the One Voice IMPAACT initiative.

The event was inspiring and engaging for everyone!  Thank you to all of our speakers, attendees and volunteers for helping to make the summit a huge success!
