R.I.P. - Maverick

A Note From Pastor Linda

...in Christ we, though many, form one body,
and each member belongs to all the others.
(Romans 12)

Dear Friends in Christ~

Maverick- an independent individual who does not go along with a group or a party.

Not a SAINT, just a man, Republican John McCain (aka Maverick) dies at the age of 81. Our airways are filled with tributes to Senator John McCain (1936-2018) and rightly so. What can be said of McCain is that he was a civil servant- he had a heart for his country and to serve his country in many ways. One cannot deny that "he was a great American and a man of deep conviction and a patriot of the highest order"- as former President George W Bush described him after his passing. However, McCain did not live a perfect life. In his farewell statement he writes: I have made mistakes... Like most people, I have regrets. He proverbially "put his pants on one leg at a time"- just like you and me. I disagreed with some of his politics, and agreed with other political stances.

It is not my intention to list all of McCain's many accomplishments nor detail the challenges, triumphs and tragedies of his life. The airways will be filled with all of that! My pondering is this: Might we take this opportunity, as McCain's body lies in state both in Arizona and in Washington DC, as he is eulogized by many, might we consider what UNITES us rather than what DIVIDES us, and might we be willing to reach across the aisle and say- How can we do this better together? McCain writes this:

We are three-hundred-and-twenty-five million opinionated, vociferous individuals. We argue and compete and sometimes even vilify each other in our raucous public debates. But we have always had so much more in common with each other than in disagreement.

John McCain, child of God, may you rest in peace.

Got Questions? Get Answers.
New Fall Sunday Series Starting September 9

Everyone has questions.  Young children ask "why?"  Teenagers ask "why not?"  Adults question "what if?"  Do you have questions about God, Jesus, the Bible?  Do you have questions about life?  Do you have questions for God about life?  Every day, more and more people are going to Siri or Alexa or Google to find answers to their questions about and for God.  I have a better idea:  Come to Hosanna to "get answers."

September Read:
Educated:  A Memoir by Tara Westover
An unforgettable memoir about a young girl who, kept out of school, leaves her survivalist family and goes on to earn a PhD from Cambridge University.
The story begins:  Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her "head-for-the-hills bag". In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard.
Discussion Date:  Tuesday, September 25 at 7pm at Kelly Monson's home.
