is an environmental, cultural and spiritual parable derived from living in the foothills of Appalachia amidst the context of climate change and the transition from a century of coal extraction to what comes next: a resilient future built on renewable energy or continued extraction through the expansion of oil & gas fracking throughout the Appalachian region. In the story, Ezell's choices, traumas, ancestors and more intersect with themes of domination and resilience as he seeks to take advantage of an anticipated fracking boom and the opportunity to reconnect with the people and land of his raising.
Ezell has received KY Arts Council as well as national support from two performance networks and was recently selected for a NEFA National Theater Project (NTP) award, one of only eight in the country and the only rurally-based project to be awarded this year as well as the first-ever Kentucky recipient. This gripping drama opens in 1691, where Sarah Brooks, who has been tried as a witch, is sentenced to hang, cursing those who would disturb her rest. Now jump to the present: six high school seniors have a graduation party at Heather's house, which is built on the hill where the condemned witches were buried. Heather goads the others into inviting a new girl, Sarah, to their party. Sarah is the perfect example of the 'trash' Heather thinks is moving in and ruining the town. Heather insists that Sarah drink a glass of 'Initiation Punch,' and when Sarah collapses and dies, the joke suddenly stops. To protect their post-graduation dreams, the others decide to throw Sarah's body down the backyard well and vow never to tell anyone what happened. Eight years later, the group must once again come together. Construction near the well has revealed... nothing. A police detective has told Heather that a woman in a long dress has been seen on her property. Is it Sarah?

The Artist's Way Workshops

A twelve-week workshop based on the "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron, an empowering book for aspiring and working artists.
The workshops will begin on Tuesday, August 20, from 7:00 till 9:00 pm. The instructor, Glenda White, will lead participants through a comprehensive program to recover their creativity from a variety of blocks, replacing them with artistic confidence and productivity.
There is absolutely no requirement to be a "real" artist, or to know anything about creating in order to benefit from this class. The class requires the text, "The Artist's Way" (25th Anniversary Edition) available in paperback. Second hand books are easily found through local used booksellers or on
Amazon.com.

Pass it On: Exhibit of works by Learnshop Instructors

The Kentucky Artisan Center will showcase the works of over 50 Learnshop Instructors
in the exhibit "Pass it On" in the Center's lobby from June 30 - Oct. 20, 2019. Berea's Festival of Learnshops offers over 160 workshops by outstanding professional artists, musicians, writers and craftspeople. This exhibit includes a wide variety of mediums and techniques from painting to furniture, sculpture and jewelry. Viewers can see the wi
de array of talent these Learnshop instructors are passing on to their students.
Originally from Rochester, New York, Sabra L. Crockett has lived in numerous locations t
hroughout the south before finding her home in Louisville, Kentucky. There she enjoys being surrounded
by beautiful songbirds and a spectacular variety of trees.
"I am fascinated by nature. It has a secret language that I try to decipher. There is a feeling I get when observing the birds, animals, and trees - a feeling that I am experiencing something that is so familiar, and yet so extraordinary," she states. "I have been visiting one of the largest and oldest Ginko trees in Louisville for many years now and the painting in this exhibit is the first in a series about this tree."

On Saturday, Oct. 5, Diana Colgate, of Shepherdsville, will demonstrate her pastel painting techniques from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Kentucky Artisan Center. Colgate paints landscapes in brilliant color often creating works on site.

Painted Gourds Demonstrated by Donna Smith
Gourd artist Donna Smith will demonstrate her painting techniques on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10:30 to 3:30 at the Kentucky Artisan Center. Smith's husband Donnie cuts lids and openings into their gourds and Donna embellishes the surface with acrylic paint and stains.

Visual artists, how would you portray the concept and emotions of music? In January 2019 the Berea Arts Council moved and expanded its offerings. In addition to exhibits, we now offer a singer/songwriter series featuring local and regional musicians. The popular sessions and exceptional music inspired the concept for this exhibit. We invite you to submit works of visual art inspired by music, in whatever shape or form it speaks to you! The exhibit is open to any visual interpretation of music and any 2-D or 3-D medium. All submitted works must be ready to hang (using wire) or display on a pedestal.

Free Narrated Trolley Tour of Berea:
The trolley will run every Saturday until October 12, 2019. The tours will start at 10am at the Kentucky Artisan Center, then stop at the Artisan Village, Chestnut Street Park, Boone Tavern, and back to the Kentucky Artisan Center.
